Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a hormone that modulates metabolic pathways, which acts as a myokine under metabolic stress. We aimed to explore the association of serum FGF21 levels with skeletal muscle mass and mortality in patients on hemodialysis (HD). ⋯ Serum FGF21 levels exhibited a positive association with skeletal muscle mass but were not predictive of mortality in patients undergoing chronic HD.

Locally advanced tongue or tongue base cancer is recommended to be treated by radical resection that is usually detrimental to physiological functions. This study reports the efficacy and treatment outcome of the patients who had received total glossectomy and laryngeal suspension without lip-split mandibulotomy and free flap reconstruction to preserve laryngopharyngeal function. ⋯ Total glossectomy with laryngeal suspension can be successfully applied to locally advanced tongue or tongue base cancer, and benefits the patients with improved survival and preserved physiological function. Especially surgeons for free flap reconstruction are understaffed at some regional or district hospitals.

The actual relative dose intensity (RDI) of the attenuated R-CCOP regimen (rituximab, cytoxan, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin [PLD], vincristine, and prednisone) has not been fully investigated in Chinese geriatric patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). In particular, the optimum dose for PLD remains unclear. ⋯ The optimal dose of PLD for elderly patients with DLBCL in China remains to be determined. Evaluating the tolerance and identifying risk categories are critical for clinical decision-making in this population.

Specific immunotherapy is the only effective etiological treatment for allergic rhinitis, but subcutaneous immunotherapy has a slow onset and poor compliance. Predicting the clinical efficacy of subcutaneous immunotherapy in advance can reduce unnecessary medical costs and resource waste. This study aimed to identify metabolites that could predict the efficacy of subcutaneous immunotherapy on seasonal allergic rhinitis by serum metabolomics. ⋯ Some metabolites, such as hypotaurine, taurine, and l-alanine, have the potential to become predictive biomarkers for effective subcutaneous immunotherapy.

Lung transplantation is a therapeutic option for patients with end-stage lung disease. However, the increase in organ demand has surpassed the number of donors, with many patients unable to outlive the long waiting period. This study aimed to assess mortality and its risk factors in patients on the waiting list for lung transplantation in a single medical centre. ⋯ This is the first Taiwanese study to describe the mortality factors in patients waiting for lung transplantation. The main factors influencing the survival of these patients were lower BMI, NYHA class IV, and diseases which cause end-stage lung diseases (infection and pulmonary fibrosis).
