[Consequences of obesity in outcomes after cardiac surgery. Analysis of ARIAM registry].
Obesity is a disease that affects a large part of the population and has been associated with worse outcomes after cardiac surgery. The aim of our study is to evaluate the consequences of obesity related to postoperative complications, hospital length of stay and mortality. ⋯ Obese patients undergoing cardiac surgery have a mortality, rate of complications and length of stay similar to non-obese. Obese patients required less reoperations but developed more frequently postoperative renal failure.

[Prognostic value of troponin in patients with acute heart failure attended in Spanish Emergency Departments: TROPICA study (TROPonin in acute heart failure)].
To determine whether positive or negative troponin values determined in the Emergency Department (ED) in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) can predict short-term evolution (30-day intrahospitalary mortality and reconsultation at 30 days). ⋯ Troponin positivity in the ED in patients with AHF is independently associated with a greater intrahospitalary and 30-day mortality but not with a greater rate of reconsultation to the ED during the following 30 days. The availability of troponin analysis in all EDs makes its determination recommended in all patients with AHF to allow evaluation of early short-term prognosis.

[Venous thromboembolism risk and antithrombotic prophylaxis among patients admitted to Spanish hospitals (ENDORSE study)].
The proportion of patients at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in Spanish hospitals and, among those, the proportion who receive prophylaxis are not well known. The objective of this study was to obtain this information by means of the analysis of data from the Spanish centres that participated in the international ENDORSE study. ⋯ VTE prophylaxis in the Spanish centres was more common in surgical patients than in medical patients. Nevertheless, it is still necessary to extend the VTE prophylaxis to a significant number of patients (29%) at high risk of VTE, particularly in medical wards.

[Usefulness of the administration of intravenous iron sucrose for the correction of preoperative anemia in major surgery patients].
There is a high incidence of perioperative anemia among surgical patients (20%-70%). Preoperative anemia has been linked to an increased postoperative morbidity and mortality, as well as a decreased quality of life of surgical patients. In addition, a low preoperative hemoglobin constitutes an important predictive factor of allogeneic blood transfusion in major surgery. We evaluated the efficacy of intravenous iron sucrose (IVIS) administration for correction of anemia in these patient populations. ⋯ Because of the low incidence of side effects and the rapid increase of hemoglobin levels, IVIS emerges as a safe, effective drug for treating preoperative anemia in these patient populations.

[Prevalence of asymptomatic peripheral artery disease detected by the ankle-brachial index in patients with cardiovascular disease. MERITO II study].
Patients with polyvascular disease have an increased rate of cardiovascular events and death. Their identification would define a subgroup of the population at very high risk, who would be candidates to intensified preventive measures. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of subclinical peripheral artery disease in subjects with a previous diagnosis of vascular disease in other territories. ⋯ Prevalence of a low ABI is elevated in asymptomatic patients with coronary or cerebrovascular disease, particularly if there are clinical manifestations in both territories.
