[Tranexamic acid gel in patients treated with oral anticoagulants].
Patients treated with oral anticoagulants have increased susceptibility to bleeding, and therefore any surgical medical procedure and especially oral surgery requires a therapeutic approach that minimizes bleeding effects in these patients. ⋯ The application of a gel solution of tranexamic acid in oral anticoagulants patients ameliorates healing time and the bleeding time within the first 48-72 h.

[Arginine enhanced enteral nutrition, effect on blood inflammatory markers in head and neck cancer patients].
Although immune dysfunction in cancer patients could be multifactorial, the immune system may be modulated by specific nutritional substrates, such as arginine. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of enteral nutrition supplemented with a high dose of arginine on c-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin 6 (IL6) and tumoral necrosis factor (TNF alpha) in surgical head and neck cancer patients. ⋯ Both formulas improved IL6 and CRP levels. A high dose of enteral arginine in these patients did not add biochemical advantages as compared to a standard enteral formula.

[Gabapentin for spasticity: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial].
We aimed to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of gabapentin for the treatment of spasticity in patients with upper motor neuron syndrome. ⋯ Gabapentin demonstrated efficacy and safety at doses between 2,700 and 3,600 mg/day as a therapy for the spasticity associated with the upper motor neuron syndrome.

[Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation for acute respiratory failure in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a general respiratory ward].
In patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), noninvasive ventilatory support (NPPV) with bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) may improve clinical and physiological parameters. The present study used a randomized, prospective design to evaluate the possible benefits of NPPV plus standard therapy versus standard therapy alone in patients admitted with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure in a respiratory unit of a tertiary hospital. ⋯ Early use of noninvasive ventilation in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease leads to a more rapid improvement of physiological variables. Moreover, it is possible to apply this treatment in a general respiratory ward.
