[Severity assessment by APACHE III system in Spain].
To assess the performance of the prediction equation of the APACHE(Acute Physiology Age and Chronic Health Evaluation) III prognostic scoring system when applied in Spain. ⋯ The American APACHE III equation fit well when applied to Spanish critical patients but with limitations. Discrepancies could be attributed to differences in case-mix and variations in practice style.

[Multicenter double-blind clinical trial comparing sucralfate vs placebo in the prevention of diarrhea secondary to pelvic irradiation].
Sucralfate has been used in the prophylaxis of acute enteric toxicity induced by radiation therapy of pelvic organs. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the efficacy of sucralfate in the prevention of the acute enteric toxicity induced by pelvic irradiation in cancer patients, compared with placebo, in a multicentric double-blind randomised clinical trial. ⋯ Sucralfate is effective in the preparation of acute enteric toxicity induced by pelvic irradiation.

[A risk analysis of congenital defects due to drug intake during pregnancy. Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations].
Illicit drug abuse is a major area of interest, for clinicians, as well as for public health and social authorities. But one of the major concerns is the illicit drug abuse during the periconceptional period and throughout pregnancy, because of its potential effect on the embryo and fetus. In this study we analyze the possible risk of illicit drug abuse during pregnancy for different selected congenital defects. ⋯ The women who are addicted to illicit drugs during pregnancy, have an increased risk for infants with several congenital defects. The way to prevent these effects should be based on a good information about this aspect to the general population, as well as on a careful medical control of the nutrition of these mothers and their health and social conditions during gestation, and the treatment of their addiction before and during pregnancy.

To determine the techniques used for the etiological diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and to describe the predominant causative organisms as well as prognostic factors of ICU mortality. ⋯ In 45.5% of patients with community-acquired pneumonia admitted to ICU, no causative pathogen was identified. The prognosis of these patients was influenced by the severity of disease assessed by APACHE II score and presence of multisystemic failure and shock at the time of ICU admission.

[Evaluation of the use of the pulmonary artery catheter in patients with acute myocardial infarct: The PAEEC study. Project of the Epidemiologic Analysis of Critical Illness].
The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the use of the pulmonary artery catheter on hospital mortality in patients admitted to hospital for acute myocardial infarction. ⋯ The use of the pulmonary artery catheter was not found to contribute to reducing the mortality of patients with acute myocardial infarction. In fact, these results questions its use, particularly in less severe patients.
