Inflammation is considered as the main triggering factor in evolution of atherosclerotic pathology of heart and blood vessels. Resistin, an inflammatory cytokine is proved to be a main mediator of initiation and progression of mechanisms leading to atherosclerosis, hypertension and ultimately to coronary artery disease. Our objective was to compare the levels of serum resistin, C-reactive protein and total leucocyte count in subjects of hypertension and coronary artery disease; and to observe the correlation of serum resistin with CRP and TLC in the study participants. ⋯ Serum resistin levels along with CRP and TLC are significantly raised in patients of hypertension and coronary artery disease while resistin levels revealed significantly positive correlation with TLC in hypertensive patients of myocardial infarction.

The study was planned to determine whether serum calcium, phosphate and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are predictors of bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal non-osteoporotic, osteopenic, and osteoporotic females. ⋯ Our study suggested that calcium and phosphate are the strongest predictors of T-score in postmenopausal normal females, while in postmenopausal osteopenic females ALP was the strongest predictor of T-score. Elevated serum ALP levels may help in determining loss of BMD in postmenopausal females.

The "silent thief" of bone osteoporosis is associated with various modifiable factors, identifying these factors is important in decreasing the prevalence of this highly prevalent disease. Therefore, this study was planned to identify these risk factors for osteoporosis in premenopausal and postmenopausal Pakistani women. ⋯ It is concluded that, within Pakistani population, the prevalence of osteopenia is high even at an early age group and the odds of having LBMD are more in less educated or illiterate women.

To document the presentation of tibial infected non-union and analyze the management outcome with Ilizarov technique in terms of bone results, functional outcome, bone transport time, external fixation time, external fixation index and any complications. ⋯ Ilizarov method beautifully addresses the formidable issue of infected non union of tibia with good outcome in terms of bone healing and infection eradication. The treatment period is relatively lengthy and hence patience on part of patient as well as the surgical team is imperative for achieving favourable outcomes.
