Comparative Study
[Respiratory morbidity in patients with and without pulmonary obstructive syndrome after upper abdominal surgery].
We wanted to determine the postoperative pulmonary complication after upper abdominal surgery in patients with pulmonary obstrutive syndrome. ⋯ The incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications was strongly associated with the presence of pulmonary obstructive syndrome.

Comparative Study
[Doppler of the umbilical and fetal middle cerebral arteries after magnesium sulfate in preeclampsia].
To compare the ratio between the fetal middle cerebral artery and the umbilical artery using Doppler flow velocimetry indices (resistance index, pulsatility index and A/B relation) before and after administration of magnesium sulfate to pregnant women with severe preeclampsia (pure or superimposed). ⋯ Intravenous administration of magnesium sulfate in patients with severe preeclampsia is associated with increased frequency of fetal Doppler diagnosis of reduced resistance in the middle cerebral artery.

[Analysis of the intracuff pressures of intensive care patients].
The intracuff pressure, when maladjusted, may cause complications. It is therefore important to measure it precisely and according to a routine. The objective of this study was to compare the intracuff pressures in the morning, afternoon and night shifts, and to measure pressures of the endotracheal tube (TOT) and the tracheotomy tube, comparing the results obtained and relating it with patients gender. ⋯ A routine of measuring intracuff pressures during the morning and night shifts should be established. Furthermore, a higher intracuff pressure in the tube was observed in patients who underwent tracheotomy, showing the importance of redoubling the care of these patients.

To determine the incidence of abstinence syndrome in children interned in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in fentanyl use and midazolam. ⋯ The abstinence syndrome presents an elevated incidence in children interned in PICU owing to the interruption of the fentanyl infusion and midazolam and in these patients it was related with the dose and the time of use.

Clinical Trial
[Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) with face mask to treat acute respiratory failure].
To evaluate the efficacy of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) administered by face mask in patients with acute respiratory failure with indication of mechanical ventilation. ⋯ These data allow the conclusion that CPAP administered by face mask improves gas exchange and decreases respiratory rate in patients with acute respiratory failure and may reduce the need for invasive mechanical ventilation.
