Comparative Study
Comparison of umbilical cord interleukin-6 in preterm infants with premature rupture of membranes and intact membranes.
To compare inflammatory mediators in the cord blood of premature newborn infants with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and intact membranes. ⋯ The premature newborn infants with PROM had increased IL-6 levels in cord blood, which was significantly higher in neonates that developed early onset sepsis.

Bacteremia in febrile children under 3 years of age in an emergency department of a university hospital.
To review the results of blood culture in febrile children seen in the pediatric emergency department over a 3 year period. ⋯ The risk factors in highly febrile children included younger age group below 24 months of age, and increase in white blood cells of more than 15,000 cell/mm(3). The study also indicates that there is an increase in prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae resistance to ampicillin and penicillin, which necessitates the need for a polyvalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to be added to the routine immunization program in the Kingdom.

To assess the prevalence of spirometric abnormalities in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients and its clinical utility in diagnosing OSA. ⋯ Saw-tooth sign was present in 12.3% and the ratio of FEF(50)/FIF(50) >1 was found in 26.1% of OSA patients. Obstructive sleep apnea patients who had these abnormalities did not differ from patients who did not have them with regard to age, body mass index, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), desaturation index and other spirometric indices. The presence of saw-tooth sign and FEF(50)/FIF(50) >1 was not related to the severity of AHI CONCLUSION: Spirometric abnormalities are not common in OSA patients not known to have underlying chronic lung diseases. Saw-tooth sign and FEF(50)/FIF(50) >1 are not useful in predicting OSA.

Clinical presentation and outcomes of acute coronary syndromes in the gulf registry of acute coronary events (Gulf RACE).
To identify the characteristics, treatments and hospital outcomes for patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in the Gulf area. ⋯ We were able to determine the characteristics, treatments and in-hospital outcomes of patients hospitalized with ACS in our region. There is room for improvement in using medications, reducing needle to door time and utilizing more cardiac catheterization services.
