To evaluate the attitudes of pregnant women towards different forms of labor pain relief, preferred methods of pain relief, and the effects of social media on their awareness and knowledge. ⋯ A total of 62.7% were aware of labor pain. However, 58.7% of the total sample group was unaware of labor pain relief, and 79.8% of the total sample group was unaware of the different forms of labor pain relief available. Educational level was significantly associated with awareness and knowledge of labor pain relief (p=0.001). The majority of pregnant women obtained information from friends (57.5%); and only 16.1% of women received information from their health care providers.Conlclusion: Most of the pregnant women recruited into this study had insuficient awareness of labor pain and methods of pain relief. They acquired their information from their friends and families rather than from their health care providers.

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a leading cause of hysterectomies, the cause of which is usually diagnosed with preoperative endometrial sampling. We planned this study to assess the accuracy of diagnosing the histologic patterns of endometrium in the preoperative sample in reference to the final histologic diagnosis in hysterectomy. ⋯ We retrospectively reviewed medical charts between January 2011 and December 2015 at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia and identified 43 cases of AUB with complete documentation. The histologic diagnoses were classified into normal and benign pathology group (N/B), or carcinoma and hyperplasia category (Ca/H). Measures of validity were used to compare endometrial sampling histological diagnoses to diagnoses following hysterectomy and Cohen's kappa to assess for agreement between the 2 modalities. Results: The median age of all patients was 49 years. Preoperative histologic examination showed 53.8% sensitivity, 90% specificity, 70% positive predictive values and 81.8% negative predictive values, 30.1% false positive rates and 18.2% false negative rates. The agreement between preoperative and postoperative histologic diagnoses was moderate (79.1%, k=0.469). Conclusion: The accuracy of preoperative histologic examination was moderate. Our findings recommend cautious clinical decision making and limiting hysterectomy to women who do not respond to other therapeutic measures.

To determine the applicability of Jones, Hansen, and Wasserman predictive equations for maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) in Saudi females. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between March and May 2017. Maximal oxygen consumption was measured directly through the COSMED system for cardiopulmonary exercise testing in 102 girls with normal body mass index (19-25 years old). Maximal oxygen consumption was indirectly predicted by Jones, Hansen, and Wasserman equations. ⋯ Bland-Altman plot analysis suggested a lack of agreement between direct and predicted VO2max. Pearson correlation failed to reveal any correlation between direct VO2max and VO2max calculated with any of the 3 equations. Conclusion: Jones, Hansen, and Wasserman equations for prediction of VO2max cannot be justified in the studied population. For the better prediction of VO2max, either these equations should be modified, or a new equation should be developed for the Saudi population.

To evaluate the awareness of spina bifida (SB), risk factors and possible preventive measures among mothers who had been following in our clinic with a spina bifida affected child. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study with 38 mothers of SB patients who are following at SB and hydrocephalus clinic at King Fahad University Hospital, Khobar, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. ⋯ Thirty-eight mother were included in this questionnaire. Most of the participants were Saudi (94.7%). Ten out of 38 women (26.3%) had used medications during pregnancy (pain medications and herbal drugs), 4 out of 38 (10.5%) had been exposed to imaging radiation, while 9 (23.7%) had experienced moderate to high grade fever (39-41°C) during pregnancy. Moreover, the majority (86.8%) of these women did not receive folic acid (FA) before pregnancy, and 42.1% of them did not have FA during their first trimester. Only one (2.6%) gave positive family history of SB while, 6 (15.8%) reported having other SB children. Conclusion: There is a considerably low level of awareness in mothers of SB patients despite prevalence of this anomaly in the Eastern province. This necessitates an effort from health care providers to educate the community about this birth defect entity. Furthermore, genetic counseling should be encouraged especially in those who have a positive familial history for better understanding. Also, larger sample size with randomized controlled trials and larger epidemiological studies should be implemented.
