Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a condition that may cause multiple organ dysfunction and has a high rate of mortality and morbidity. Therapeutic hypothermia is the only proven treatment that decreases the sequel and mortality rate of neonates that are born after 36 weeks of pregnancy and have moderate-severe HIE. ⋯ This study demonstrated that the depth of acidosis in the blood gas, multiple organ dysfunction, and the existence of early-onset seizures are the signs of poor prognosis. Therefore, physicians need to be aware of such prognostic factors to follow these patients more closely in terms of possible complications and to inform their parents.

Convalescent plasma (CP) might be an additional treatment modality in COVID-19. The aim of this study was to compare CP-related clinical characteristics and perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with mild or moderate-severe COVID-19. ⋯ Although data on the results of CP treatment in pregnant women are somewhat limited, it has been suggested that early CP treatment may be associated with improvements in laboratory and ventilatory parameters in pregnant women with mild and moderate-severe COVID-19. Nevertheless, there is a need for further, randomized controlled studies on this subject with the inclusion of greater numbers of patients.

Oncometabolites provide a new approach towards the diagnostics and prognosis of the clinical progress of prostate cancer (PCa). This study is about the diagnostic and predictive value of a panel of urinary oncometabolites (ethanolamine, kynurenine, β-alanine, α-alanine, leucine, isoleucine, γ-aminobutyric acid, and sarcosine) and correlation with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and Gleason score in patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. ⋯ Urinary concentrations of ethanolamine, sarcosine, kynurenine, β-alanine, and isoleucine in PCa group differ significantly from that of control group. New expanded population studies are needed to discuss our results.

Candida infections are gaining more attention for the last few decades so diagnostic tools are very important for early diagnosis. Conventional identification of yeasts is time-consuming, molecular methods are more complicated and relatively expensive gold-standard methods. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was put into the market due to its speed and high accuracy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of corn meal tween-80 agar (CMTA), CHROMagar Candida medium, and MALDI-TOF MS and to compare the obtained results with DNA sequencing. ⋯ MALDI-TOF MS is found to be the most accurate identification tool for clinically important Candida strains. CMTA alone should not be used for the final identification of Candida species and the chromogenic medium should always be considered presumptive.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major cognitive disorder classified as a common type of dementia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most practical method for diagnostic purposes in AD. The aim of the study was to determine the volume of the hippocampus and intracranial structures in AD using MRI. ⋯ The most efficient volumetric study in AD could be performed by obtaining long-term periodic morphometric data of an early diagnosed and regularly followed-up patient population.
