In this study, we aimed to evaluate the initial hematological findings analyzed on admission in confirmed COVID-19 patients who were transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU), to predict possible hematological indices. ⋯ These data showed that age, initial NLR, PLR, and LYM × PLT were associated with the severity of COVID-19 disease and patients’ need for the ICU. Therefore, initial hemogram parameters may be essential to predict the prognosis of COVID-19 patients.

Lymphopenia is the most important criterion of mortality and discharging feature for patients infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study aimed to investigate the clinical impact of a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) treatment on the clinical course of COVID-19. ⋯ The LMWH treatment group demonstrated better laboratory findings, including recovery in the lymphocyte count, CRP, and D-dimer results.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the etiology, clinical characteristics, and outcome of nontraumatic coma (NTC) among children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). ⋯ Although results obtained from this single-center study cannot be generalized to the pediatric population, the contribution to the literature in terms of the relationships between NTC etiology, and outcome can be crucial for clinical decision-making. We report neuroinfection as the most common cause of NTC, and the only factor that was closely associated with mortality was PRISM III score. Length of hospital stay was inversely correlated to patient mortality.

Mucins, such as MUC1 and MUC5AC, are known for their protective and moisturizing role in intestinal epithelium. Their expression is tightly controlled given their essential role in normal tissue homeostasis, whereas their deregulation leads to chronic inflammation, and even cancer. This study aimed to assess the expression profiles of MUC1 and MUC5AC and their implications in colorectal carcinogenesis. ⋯ The expression of MUC1 might be a poor prognostic biomarker in CRC and could play a role in tumor transformation and metastasis. However, MUC5AC expression might be a good prognostic in the Tunisian cohort.

Anesthesia-induced hypotension may have negative consequences in geriatric patients. Therefore, predicting hypotension remains an important topic for anesthesiologists. Pleth Variability Index (PVI) measurement provides information about the fluid status and vascular tonus of patients. In this study, the ability of the Pleth Variability Index to predict hypotension after general anesthesia induction was evaluated. ⋯ Predicting hypotension in geriatric patients is an important issue for anesthesiologists. As an easily applicable test, the Pleth Variability Index is useful in predicting MAP reduction in patients. This practical technique can be used routinely in all geriatric patient groups.
