Vitamin D, adropin, proinflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress closely related with metabolic homeostasis and endothelial dysfunction. The aim of the present study is to investigate how vitamin D levels affect serum adropin, IL-1ß, IL-6, and oxidative stress. ⋯ Vitamin D could show its effects through vitamin D receptors on tissues or on the ENHO gene in adropin secreting tissues via direct or indirect mechanisms. Proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, and adropin targeted studies could contribute to the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with vitamin D deficiency in future.

The clinical, pathological, and genetic characteristics of lipid storage myopathy in northern China.
The lipid storage myopathy (LSM) diagnosis is based on the patient's clinical manifestations and muscle pathology. However, when genetic testing is lacking, there is a high rate of misdiagnosis of the disease. This study aimed to investigate the clinical and pathological features of genetically diagnosed LSM in northern China, analyze genetic mutations' characteristics, and improve the LSM diagnostic rate. ⋯ The clinical manifestations of LSM are complex and diverse, mainly manifested by proximal muscle weakness and exercise intolerance in the extremities. The pathological images of LSM muscles are abnormal storage of lipid droplets in muscle fibers, primarily involving type I fibers. The LSM patients were mainly multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) caused by the ETFDH gene mutation. It is necessary to perform an accurate typing diagnosis of LSM.

The differences in molecular mechanisms during a stable period and the changes in the inflammatory responses during exacerbations between distinct severe asthma phenotypes remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to characterize stable and exacerbation period serum cytokine and periostin levels of 5 different predefined severe asthma phenotypes with real-life data. Changes in the viral infection-induced exacerbations were also analyzed. ⋯ Our study showed that serum periostin levels were decreased in viral infection-induced exacerbations and increased in the presence of eosinophilia independent from atopy and it can help to differentiate eosinophilia even if the patient is under long-term systemic steroid therapy. Also, serum IL-13 levels may reflect peripheral eosinophilia in patients without long-term systemic steroid use.

Ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration biopsy are frequently used to diagnose thyroid cancer. However, supportive data might be required in case of diagnostic difficulty. This study investigated whether there is a relationship between thiol/ disulphide homeostasis and cytological and histopathological diagnosis of thyroid nodules. ⋯ Oxidative stress parameters were significantly higher in thyroid cancer. A positive correlation was detected between Bethesda categories with increased risk of malignancy and the disulphide/native thiol ratio and the disulphide/total thiol ratio.

Autologous transfusion using a cell saver system has been used in liver transplantation with controversial outcomes. Its efficiency in patients with massive intraoperative transfusion has not been studied yet. This study aimed to evaluate effect of cell salvage (CS) on intraoperative bleeding and transfusion practices in liver transplantation with massive intraoperative transfusion. ⋯ Use of CS in patients undergoing liver transplantation with massive intraoperative transfusion did not improve clinical and transfusion-related outcomes. In conclusion, its usage can be questionable given the absence of any clinical benefit and presence of poor outcomes.
