Lamotrigine for HIV-associated painful sensory neuropathies: a placebo-controlled trial.
To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of lamotrigine (LTG) for the treatment of pain in HIV-associated sensory neuropathies. ⋯ Lamotrigine was well-tolerated and effective for HIV-associated neuropathic pain in patients receiving neurotoxic antiretroviral therapy. Additional research is warranted to understand the differing response among patients receiving neurotoxic antiretroviral therapy compared with those not receiving neurotoxic antiretroviral therapy.

Pregabalin for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pregabalin in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). ⋯ Treatment of PHN with pregabalin is safe, efficacious in relieving pain and sleep interference, and associated with greater global improvement than treatment with placebo.

Controlled-release oxycodone for pain in diabetic neuropathy: a randomized controlled trial.
Opioid treatment has played a limited role in the management of diabetic neuropathy, in part because of concerns about the responsiveness of neuropathic pain to opioid treatment. This controlled study evaluated the efficacy and safety of controlled-release (CR) oxycodone in subjects with moderate to severe pain due to diabetic neuropathy. ⋯ In this 6-week trial, CR oxycodone was effective for the treatment of moderate to severe pain due to diabetic neuropathy. Adverse events were typical of opioid-related side effects.

Intranasal sumatriptan in cluster headache: randomized placebo-controlled double-blind study.
Current evidence-based acute treatments of cluster headache are limited to oxygen inhalation and subcutaneous sumatriptan. Intranasal sumatriptan is a new formulation with better tolerability than the subcutaneous route. Two open-label studies suggested efficacy of intranasal sumatriptan in cluster headache. ⋯ Sumatriptan nasal spray is effective and well tolerated in the acute treatment of cluster headache attacks of at least 45 minutes' duration.

A dose-comparison trial of topiramate as monotherapy in recently diagnosed partial epilepsy.
To evaluate topiramate as monotherapy in adults and children with recently diagnosed, localization-related epilepsy, comparing two dosages of topiramate in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind study. ⋯ Although the primary efficacy analysis was negative, time-to-exit analyses that included time-to-first-seizure as a covariate, between-group differences in seizure-free rates, and longer time-to-first-seizure with higher serum concentration provide evidence that topiramate is effective as monotherapy in patients with localization-related epilepsy.
