In patients with COPD, limited data have been reported concerning the association between dyspnea perception and exercise tests. Moreover, the perception of dyspnea has not been analyzed in patients with the same severity of air-flow obstruction. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between the degree of dyspnea and exercise capacity in subjects with COPD who had the same severity of air-flow obstruction. ⋯ In subjects with COPD and with the same severity of air-flow obstruction, a high score in dyspnea was related to a poor maximum exercise capacity. Our results support the view that, in COPD, the severity of air-flow obstruction was less informative than symptoms in the combined assessment of the disease.

Effectiveness of Hammock Positioning in Reducing Pain and Improving Sleep-Wakefulness State in Preterm Infants.
Hammock positioning is now frequently used with preterm infants admitted to ICUs. However, few studies have investigated the extent to which hammock positioning reduces pain and improves the sleep-wakefulness state compared with traditional positioning. ⋯ Hammock positioning was an effective treatment option to reduce pain and improve sleep-wakefulness state. It also helped to reduce heart rate and breathing frequency, and to increase peripheral SpO2 , which made it a treatment option for preterm infants.

People with cystic fibrosis face substantial physical, psychological, and social challenges as they move into adolescence and adulthood, which are likely to impact on their health-related quality of life. This study sought to examine the relative importance of physical and mental health variables associated with health-related quality of life in this group. ⋯ Mental health variables, depression and anxiety, were strongly associated with health-related quality of life in subjects with cystic fibrosis and demonstrated greater effect sizes and explained a higher proportion of the variance overall than the physical health indicators, FEV1% and body mass index, which highlighted the importance of screening for, and treating, depression and anxiety symptoms.

Different brands of volume-targeted modes may vary the location of tidal volume (VT) monitoring and whether peak inspiratory pressure is adjusted based on inspiratory, expiratory, or leak-compensated VT. These variables may result in different levels of support provided to patients, especially when an endotracheal tube (ETT) leak is present. We hypothesized that there would be no differences in gas exchange, triggering, or work of breathing between volume-targeted modes of 3 different brands of equipment in a surfactant-deficient, spontaneously breathing animal model with and without an ETT leak. ⋯ When a moderate ETT leak was present, volume-targeted modes that used proximal VT monitoring and triggering with adaptive leak compensation capabilities appeared more effective in providing ventilation support than did a ventilator that used measurements obtained from the back at the ventilator and does not have leak compensation.
