Comparative StudyChest Abdominal-Focused Assessment Sonography for Trauma during the primary survey in the Emergency Department: the CA-FAST protocol.
To evaluate the feasibility of a new protocol, Chest Abdominal-Focused Assessment Sonography for Trauma (CA-FAST), during the primary survey and to estimate its diagnostic accuracy when compared with thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT) scan. ⋯ According to our results CA-FAST protocol proved to be a rapid bedside method, with good accuracy and high NPV in detection of ultrasonographic patterns suggestive of serious injury in trauma patients; moreover, the additional research of LCs did not cause a delay in the diagnosis. Ultrasonography should be used as initial investigation during the primary survey, sending to further diagnostic studies (CT scan) only those patients not clearly classified.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of the route of nutrition and L-alanyl-L-glutamine supplementation in amino acids' concentration in trauma patients.
Our purpose was to assess the amino acids' (AAs) profile in trauma patients and to assess the effect of the route of nutrition and the exogenous ALA-GLN dipeptide supplementation on plasma AAs' concentration. ⋯ We found an early depletion of plasma AAs' concentration which partially recovered at day 6, which was unaffected by the route of nutrition. ALA-GLN dipeptide supplementation produced a small increase in plasma levels of glutamine and citrulline.

ReviewNo correlation between lower extremity deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism proportions in trauma: a systematic literature review.
To assess the effect of surveillance on deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) rates, the efficacy of chemoprophylaxis and mechanical prophylaxis, and the relationship between DVT and PE. ⋯ The results suggest that PE is not associated with lower extremity DVT in adult trauma patients.

Multicenter StudyDiscrepancy between the initial assessment of injury severity and post hoc determination of injury severity in patients with apparently mild traumatic brain injury: a retrospective multicenter cohort analysis.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of trauma-related visits to emergency departments (ED). Determination of monitoring requirements of patients with apparently mild TBI is challenging. Patients may turn out to be more severely injured than initially assumed, and failure to identify these patients constitutes a serious threat to patient safety. We, therefore, aimed to identify clinical risk factors for more severe injuries in patients with apparently mild TBI. ⋯ Six risk factors of more severe injury in patients presenting with apparently mild TBI were identified. Patients with any of these factors should be thoroughly monitored for signs of neurologic deterioration.
