Multicenter Study Observational StudyTemporal trends in length of stay and readmissions after fast-track hip and knee arthroplasty.
Implementation of fast-track protocols in total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) has dramatically changed the perioperative care, leading to a subsequent reduction in post-operative length of stay (LOS) and mor-bidity. Previous investigations in Denmark have shown a reduction in LOS from about ten days in 2000 to four days in 2009. We aimed to describe temporal changes in LOS and readmissions within the context of a continuous multicentre collaboration focusing on enhancing recovery and reducing morbidity after fast-track THA and TKA. ⋯ The study was supported by an unconditional PhD grant from Lundbeckfonden to PBP (R230-2017-166).

Multicenter Study Observational StudyLaparoscopy in major abdominal emergency surgery seems to be a safe procedure.
Laparoscopy is well established in the majority of elective procedures in abdominal surgery. In contrast, it is primarily used in minor surgery such as appendectomy or cholecystectomy in the emergent setting. This study aimed to analyze the safety and effectiveness of a laparoscopic approach in a large cohort of major abdominal emergencies. ⋯ none.

Multicenter StudyLack of national consensus in preoperative airway assessment.
Difficult airway management is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Several preoperative risk factors associated with airway management difficulties have been proposed; however, no clear guideline for airway assessments exists. We therefore hypothesised that Danish airway assessment was lacking uniformity. We aimed to examine whether multivariable risk assessment tools and predictors for difficult intubation and mask ventilation were used systematically. ⋯ none.

Ventral hernia repairs are among the most frequently performed surgical procedures. The variations of repair techniques are multiple and outcome has been unacceptable. Despite the high volume, it has been difficult to obtain sufficient data to provide evidence for best practice. ⋯ Based predominantly on nationwide data, the present thesis has accomplished pioneering results on outcome from ventral hernia repairs. The results have inspired to increased research and the development of other ventral hernia databases, as well as pointed out a number of risk factors for poor outcome and future challenges in ventral hernia surgery. DVHD and similar registers have a huge potential and can serve as an essential and important platform for further improvement of ventral hernia surgery in the future.

Multicenter StudyThe patient safety climate in Danish hospital units.
This study aimed to describe and analyse the patient safety climate in 15 Danish hospital units. ⋯ The TrygFonden provided financial support to the Danish Safer Hospital Programme, which funded this study.
