A review of articles published between 2000 and 2013, retrieved from several databases, was conducted to identify research findings regarding nursing interventions intended to meet the needs of the family members of patients in the intensive care unit. The dimensions of need identified were support, comfort, reassurance, information and closeness, with reassurance, information and closeness being the most important. ⋯ Consequently, nurses should promote comprehensive family-centred care by using the best evidence to meet families' needs. However, more experimental studies are required to determine the effectiveness of specific interventions.

Wound-related pain, particularly following wound care interventions, is a concern to all involved in wound management. However, little is understood about how remedial action to manage such pain can affect healthcare provision, particularly in terms of resources. ⋯ It was found that the presence of pain influences the choice and frequency of analgesia, use of anxiolytic medications, frequency of dressing change and the environment in which care is provided. These results can help clinicians to understand the close relationship that exists between pain and clinical intervention, and the implications for resource management.
