Global use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS; also called electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes) has increased dramatically in recent years. However, due to the limited safety studies and growing concerns on the potential toxicity from long term use of ENDS, many national and international governments have employed regulatory measures to curtail its use. One of the most significant challenges regulators of ENDS encounter is the lack of quality standards to assess ENDS, e-liquid (solution used with ENDS which contain nicotine--a highly toxic and addictive substance), and amount of nicotine delivery to aerosol during ENDS use. ⋯ Our analysis showed the high consistency between the labeled and measured nicotine concentration for popular on the Polish market ENDS e-liquids. Also, our analysis demonstrates that the risk for nicotine overdose is likely minimal when ENDS are used in a similar manner as a combustible cigarette. However, due to the toxicity risk nicotine poses regulatory measures focused on safety and quality of e-liquids should continually be exercised.

[Preemptive local anesthetic infiltration in hallux valgus one-day surgery].
The surgical treatment of hallux valgus deformity is connected with significant postoperative pain. Spinal and general anesthesia as well as peripheral blocks are successfully used in foot surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of local anesthetic infiltration before hallux valgus one-day surgery on postoperative pain and the need for analgesics. ⋯ Preemptive local anesthetic infiltration in one-day hallux valgus surgery significantly decreases postoperative pain. It is safe, efficient and allows fast discharge.

The consumption of energy beverages is increasing, especially among young people. The increasing consumption of these drinks increases the data of side effects. Case report: A 26-year old male was admitted to Toxicology Department suspected of intoxication due to ethyl alcohol and unknown psychoactive substances. ⋯ Unfortunately, serum caffeine levels were not measured. There was no identification of any other factors that could be responsible for the observed symptoms. It appears that based on the interview, clinical manifestation, and negative toxicology laboratory testing (excluding the presence of ethanol), it is possible to connect the seizure state with the consumption of a high dose of energy drinks, rich in caffeine and taurine.

Erythema exudativum multiforme (EM) is an acute mucocutaneous disease. Etiology of this disease is not clear. 50% - 60% cases of EM is induced by HSV infection (herpes simplex virus 1, herpes simplex virus 2). EM lesions may appear as red macules, erosions, ulcerations and hemorrhagic crusts. The study describes the case of 22 - year - old male who had characteristic lesions for EM after HSV infection.

Cigarette smoke is the major and most common indoor source of carbon monoxide. CO combines with haemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) which hinders oxygen transport and causes myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease. CO damages the endothelium of large and medium arteries and contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. ⋯ For non-smokers, the study identified a significant relationship between the level of exhaled CO and the participants' gender (p < 0.05), weight (p = 0.003), and height (p = 0.0005). For smokers, there is a relationship between the level of eCO and the daily cigarette consumption (p = 0.01), the type of cigarettes most frequently smoked (p < 0.05) and the favoured cigarette brand (p = 0.005).
