Comparative StudyCorrosion protection of reusable surgical instruments.
To understand the corrosion properties of surgical scissors, 416 stainless steel disks and custom electrodes were used as simulated surfaces under various conditions. These simulated surfaces were exposed to tap water and 400-ppm synthetic hard water as Ca2CO3 under different conditions. The samples were evaluated by various techniques for corrosion potential and the impact of environmental conditions on the integrity of the passive film. ⋯ The results suggest that surgical instruments made from 416 stainless steel are not susceptible to uniform corrosion; however, they do undergo localized corrosion. The use of suitable cleaning products can offer protection against localized corrosion during the cleaning step. More importantly, the use of potentiodynamic polarization techniques allowed for a quick and convenient approach to evaluate the corrosion properties of surgical instruments under a variety of simulated-use environmental conditions.

The safety of any medical device system is dependent on the application of a disciplined, well-defined, risk management process throughout the product life cycle. Hardware, software, human, and environmental interactions must be assessed in terms of intended use, risk, and cost/benefit criteria. ⋯ The article explains the principles of risk management, using terminology and examples from the domain of software engineering. It may serve as a guide to those new to the concepts of risk management and as an aide-memoire for medical device system/software engineers who are more familiar with the topic.

We talked about using 3 UNIX commands. In UNIX, there are many other options for using them. But for the most part, if you can use them like I have shown, you will be able to do everything you need. ⋯ If you want more information about any command, you can type man COMMAND, e.g., man ls. This will give you more ways to use the ls command. And remember, the command pwd tells what directory you are in, cd/directory changes to another directory, ls lists the contents of the directory you are in, ls more displays the directory contents 1 page at a time (the space bar gives you the next page), ls-al gives a detailed listing of the contents of the directory you are in, ls-al more displays them 1 page at a time (the space bar gives you the next page).

Mannequin-assessed dry-heat exchanges in the incubator-nursed newborn.
For manufacturers of warming devices for newborn infants, knowledge of the partition of the various channels of heat transfer between the neonate and the environment is necessary to regulate them adequately. The goal of this study was to determine the contributions of the different components of dry heat exchange using a thermal mannequin that replicated a full-term neonate. Each mannequin segment could be controlled separately at a selected surface temperature. ⋯ Whatever the incubator temperature, a fivefold increase in convective heat exchange was observed when air velocity increased, whereas radiative heat exchange was unchanged. At an incubator temperature of 34 degrees C and for air velocities between 0.1 and 0.4 m/sec radiative heat exchange is the dominant mode of heat loss. The results suggest that this thermal mannequin is a good tool for assessing dry heat exchange in incubators.
