Comparative StudyMicroscopic colitis and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth--diagnosis behind the irritable bowel syndrome?
Some patients previously diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may develop microscopic colitis or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). ⋯ Patients suspected to have irritable bowel syndrome should be evaluated for microscopic colitis and SIBO. The proper diagnosis and the specific treatment may cure some difficult cases of the so called "irritable bowel syndrome".

Infective endocarditis in non-HIV immunosuppressed patients.
Infective endocarditis is a septic illness with sudden or insidious onset that causes heart lesions or aggravates the preexisting ones; during its course it can affect other organs, mortality being high. ⋯ It was noted that in addition to endocardial damage due to the multiple etiologic agents involved, non-HIV immunosuppression in these patients plays an important role. The association of Carmeli score in patients diagnosed with infective endocarditis is significant, especially in case of adequate therapy initiation for a right treatment of this pathology.

The semi-quantitative calprotectin rapid test--is it useful in inflammatory bowel disease?
To assess the efficiency of the dosage of the semi-quantitative calprotectin rapid test in evaluating the activity of inflammatory bowel diseases. ⋯ The rapid test for assessing calprotectin could be a useful non-invasive marker in appreciating the severity of clinical and biological disease activity.

[Current microbiological data on lower respiratory tract infection in cystic fibrosis. Part I: Isolated microorganisms and their clinical significance].
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a disease that degrades the local defense mechanisms of the lower respiratory tract. As a result, patients develop recurrent infections that progressively deteriorates antiinfection defenses and represent the major cause of mortality. A hallmark of those infections is the diversity of microorganisms isolated from broncho-alveolar lavage or sputum. ⋯ Hypermutation of P. aeruginosa--the most common species isolated from patients with CF, is the essential factor in the development of multi-resistance to antibiotics. As P. aeruginosa, B. cenocepacia is a virulent species that cause infections with poor prognosis. Microorganisms with secondary role (H. influenzae, S. maltophilia, atypical Mycobacteria, Aspergillus spp) whose clinical significance has not been clarified yet, require further studies.

Thoraco-abdominal injuries: the general surgeon's perspective.
Thoraco-abdominal traumatic injuries affect the inferior part of the thoracic cavity and the superior part of the abdominal cavity. This study summarizes five years of our surgical department's experience in the diagnosis and management of thoracoabdominal trauma patients. ⋯ Thoraco-abdominal injuries are characterized by high heterogeneity and can provide significant decision-making challenges. The accurate diagnosis of all coexisting injuries is critically important, as the diagnosis will determine surgical or non-operative management of these injuries.
