Intraoperative navigation systems have been developed to increase the safety and efficiency of endoscopic sinus surgery. The objective of this study was to compare the application and utilization of optical and electromagnetical navigation systems in our own experience during the endoscopic surgery. ⋯ Intraoperative navigation systems assist the surgeon with anatomical localization during endoscopic sinus surgery and improve its safety and efficacy. The choice of optical or electromagnetic system should be compared of effective costs and surgeon's preferences.

Histology of the soft palate and uvula in snorers and patients with OSA syndrome has been a subject of investigation of many authors. In majority of specimens the hypertrophy of the salivary glands as well as congestion and dilation of the thin-walled vessels were observed. Some of the samples presented atrophy of the muscle bundles. ⋯ Significantly more frequent superficial salivary glands localized between the muscle bundles and epithelium were found in the OSA and snoring patients. Our results showed distinct differences between the tissues of the patients with airway disturbances and the control group. These differences may be caused by the influence of the vibration on the soft palate and uvula, but on the other hand they may be the reason for excessive flaccidity of these structures and disturbances occurring during sleep.

The aim of this study was to determine influence of extracorporeal circulation and body temperature on transiently evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) in children operated on for various heart defects. The investigated group consisted of 44 children (average age 9.3 +/- 5.9 years). TEOAEs were measured one day before and 7-8 days following surgery. ⋯ TEOAEs showed tendency to decrease in patients who were operated in long lasting extracorporeal circulation in normothermia. Such a tendency was not observed in patients operated in temperatures between 30-35 degrees C and extracorporeal circulation time between 1-2 hours. This observation confirms that hypothermia has a protective role for the cochlea and could prevent its damage during long lasting operations performed in extracorporeal circulation.

In the paper showed the case of fatal necrotizing phlegmon of the neck and descending mediastinitis in 48 year old male patient with primary peritonsillar abscess. On the base of literature it was showed the etiology, pathomechanism of the evolution of this heavy complication and surgical and pharmacological methods of its treatment. In spite of prompt wide incision and drainage of phlegmon of the neck and mediastinum and intensive treatment in intensive care unit conditions patient died in the image of septic shock and pus changes in the mediastinum, heart and lungs, what was showed on the base of post-mortum examination.

The authors present actual opinions concerning etiology, pathogenesis and diagnostics of sarcoidosis with specific evaluation of the role of T lymphocytes and cytokines in formation of sarcoid granulation. Rareness of sarcoidosis in that region and difficulties in neck tumours diagnosis is emphasizing. ⋯ It always can go into generalized form. The authors present a case of solitary sarcoidosis of the neck.
