In this work, we introduce the numerous emerging areas and frontiers in the use of point-of-care ultrasonography. Of these, we review the following three: 1) the use of clinical ultrasonography in infectious and tropical diseases (we address its usefulness in the diagnosis and follow-up of the main syndromes, in tropical diseases, and in areas with scarce resources); 2) the usefulness of clinical ultrasonography in the assessment of response to volume infusion in severely ill patients (we review basic concepts and the main static and dynamic variables used for this evaluation); and 3) the use of clinical ultrasonography in the assessment of muscle mass in elderly patients with primary sarcopenia (we review the main muscles and measurements used for it).

Efficacy and safety of metformin and sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors in adults with type1 diabetes: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.
To compare the efficacy and safety of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and metformin in adults with type1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). ⋯ SGLT2 inhibitors provided greater reductions in HbA1c and body weight than metformin/placebo. Both SGLT2 inhibitors and metformin induced greater reductions in total insulin dosage than placebo, with no significant differences observed between SGLT2 inhibitors and metformin. SGLT2 inhibitors induced a higher risk for DKA than metformin/placebo.

Pain assessment in individuals with dementia and communication problems in Spain. A systematic review.
Pain assessment in individuals with advanced dementia and communication problems continue to be underdiagnosed and undertreated due to the difficulty in performing this assessment. This review explores and synthesises how pain in individuals with advanced dementia and communication problems are being assessed in the context of Spanish healthcare. ⋯ There are currently several instruments validated in Spanish to assess pain in individuals with advanced dementia and communication problems (Abbey, Algoplus, Doloplus y PAINAD-Sp). However, these instruments have still not been widely used in research, and their psychometric properties could be improved.

[Prognostic value of measuring the diameter and inspiratory collapse of the inferior vena cava in acute heart failure].
To assess the utility of measuring the diameter and collapse of the inferior vena cava (IVC) in acute heart failure (AHF), its relationship with the prognosis and serum biomarkers of congestion. ⋯ Dilation and the absence of the inspiratory collapse of the IVC are common in the context of AHF. The lack of inspiratory collapse of the IVC during the decompensation phase identifies a subgroup of patients with poorer prognosis at 6 months.
