NOTCH1 Pathway is Involved in Polyhexamethylene Guanidine-Induced Humidifier Disinfectant Lung Injuries.
An outbreak of fatal humidifier disinfectant lung injuries (HDLI) occurred in Korea. Human studies on mechanisms underlying HDLI have yet to be conducted. This study aimed to investigate methylation changes and their potential role in HDLI after exposure to HDs containing polyhexamethylene guanidine-phosphate. ⋯ NOTCH1 was identified as a candidate network hub gene in cases. NOTCH1 transcripts significantly increased in lung tissues from HDLI cases compared to unexposed controls (p=0.05). NOTCH1 may play an important role in pulmonary fibrosis of HDLI.

Feasibility and Applicability of Wireless Handheld Ultrasound Measurement of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Patients with Cardiac Symptoms.
Routine screening for carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and cardiovascular (CV) disease in asymptomatic patients has been criticized for the high costs and large number of patients required for detecting one patient with coronary artery disease (CAD). In order to overcome the low cost-effectiveness thereof, we investigated the feasibility of an economic wireless handheld ultrasound (WHUS) device for CIMT measurement in symptomatic patients. ⋯ max-CIMT measured by a WHUS device showed excellent agreement and repeatability, compared with standard ultrasound. Combined max-CIMT and plaque information added predictive power to the traditional clinical CV risk factors in detecting high-risk CAD patients.

Views on Precision Medicine among Health Professionals in Korea: A Mixed Methods Study.
This study aimed to investigate awareness, attitudes, and perspectives on precision medicine among health professionals in Korea and to identify issues that need to be addressed before implementing precision medicine. Mixed methods research was applied. For qualitative research, a semi-structured focus group interview was conducted with six health professionals. ⋯ Despite varying levels of awareness of precision medicine, the health professionals expressed a willingness to engage in precision medicine research, and recommended that health professionals work closely with policymakers to design precision medicine in a way that can be effectively adopted. Health professionals showed had a positive, but cautious, attitude toward precision medicine. The results of this study suggest areas to be addressed before ushering in precision medicine in Korea.
