Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyAddition of lidocaine suppositories to periprostatic nerve block enhances pain control in prostate biopsies: a placebo-controlled randomized trial.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a combined topical and local anesthesia consisting of a transrectal lidocaine suppository followed by periprostatic nerve block (PNB) in comparison to the combination of transrectally applied lidocaine gel followed by PNB and PNB alone as methods of reducing pain during transrectal prostate biopsy. ⋯ The addition of lidocaine suppositories to PNB as a form of combined anesthesia showed a significantly better pain reduction than the addition of lidocaine gel to PNB or PNB alone.

Comparative StudyRole of short-term antibiotic therapy at the moment of catheter removal after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.
To assess the role of short-term antibiotic therapy (ABT) in preventing urinary tract infection (UTI) after catheter removal following laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP). ⋯ ABT at the time of catheter removal reduced the risk of postoperative UTI after LRP. One would need to prescribe ABT to 24 patients to prevent 1 case of UTI.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyIs only perianal anesthesia with lidocaine-prilocaine cream sufficient to decrease the pain during transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy? A prospective randomized study.
To determine the optimal place to apply the local anesthetic agent and to investigate the efficacy of lidocaine-prilocaine cream on the perianal and intrarectal region during prostate biopsy. ⋯ Perianal anesthesia with lidocaine-prilocaine cream may solely be sufficient to decrease the pain during prostate biopsy.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of three analgesic treatment protocols for pain management during extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.
In this prospective and randomized study, we aimed to compare the efficacy of a eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) cream, diclofenac sodium (DS) and EMLA in combination with DS (EMLA+DS) for pain management during extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). ⋯ DS appears to be more efficient than EMLA in reducing pain during ESWL. Using EMLA+DS has no superiority in relieving pain compared to DS-only treatment.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyTopical and long-acting local anesthetic for prostate biopsy: a prospective randomized placebo-controlled study.
To determine the efficacy of intrarectal lidocaine gel alone and a combination of lidocaine gel with 2 different longer-acting local anesthetic (LA) agents that were injected into the periprostatic area before transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. ⋯ The combination of intrarectal lidocaine gel and periprostatic longer-acting LA agents significantly reduces the pain related to prostate biopsy, whereas intrarectal lidocaine gel administration alone does not reduce pain. Thus, administration of the periprostatic longer-acting LA agents alone is adequate.
