Acute scrotal pain sometimes requires prompt surgical intervention and therefore accurate diagnosis of different etiologies of acute scrotal pain has great therapeutical and prognostic significance. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence, symptomatology and results of treatment of acute scrotal pain in children. ⋯ Regardless of the etiology of the acute scrotal pain, it is of great importance that the patient seeks medical assistance promptly. It is therefore important to educate the parents and patients about the problems related to acute scrotal pain.

Prospective evaluation of samarium-153-EDTMP radionuclide treatment for bone metastases in patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer.
Bone is a common site of metastatic disease and the most frequent site of metastatic spread in patients with prostate cancer. Most patients with bone metastases complain of bone pains. This pain may be alleviated or eliminated by administration of radiotherapy at the site of metastases. Currently, two forms of radiotherapy administration exist: external-beam irradiation or intravenous administration of bone-seeking therapeutic radiopharmacon such as samarium-153-ethylene-diamino-tetramethylene-phosphonate (EDTMP). This radiopharmacon produces beta-particles and concentrates in the areas of enhanced osteoblastic activity. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of (153)Sm-EDTMP therapy. ⋯ After (153)Sm-EDTMP administration, bone pain palliation was observed in 72% of patients for 3 months. Hematological toxicity after (153)Sm-EDTMP treatment was mild and transient.

Case ReportsA rare case of lethal retroperitoneal abscess caused by Citrobacter koseri.
Retroperitoneal abscesses are very uncommon clinical conditions. The characteristically vague symptomatology of retroperitoneal abscess and the inherent difficulty of identifying retroperitoneal disease by physical examination contributed to these dismal therapeutic outcomes. ⋯ This case is the only reported case of C. koseri as the sole pathogen associated with a lethal retroperitoneal abscess in immunocompetent patient. The case is also notable because it confirms the recent bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and to other antimicrobial agents, like chloramphenicol or cotrimoxazol.

Comparative StudyImpact factors in urology. How well do our journals stack up against other medical and surgical journals?
The purpose of our analysis was to assess the performance of urological journals in terms of the standardized measures created by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) Journal Citation Report (JCR) in comparison to other medical and surgical fields. Additionally, an evaluation of all original articles, clinical or experimental, published in the year 2005, assessing the time interval needed from submission to publication, submission to acceptance, and acceptance to publication of a manuscript was conducted for all urologic journals. ⋯ The impact factor is a measure of the importance of scientific journals. Urological journals stack up quite well against other medical and especially surgical journals.

Effects of selective alpha-1-adrenergic receptor blockers on bladder weight.
This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of two different alpha(1)-adrenergic blockers on bladder hypertrophy using ultrasound-estimated bladder weight (UEBW) and to assess the relation between changes in UEBW and other objective and subjective parameters of disease severity in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). ⋯ UEBW decreases with alpha(1)-adrenergic receptor blockers. When used together with the other objective and subjective parameters, UEBW is a promising quantitative parameter as a follow-up tool and can be useful in monitoring the therapeutic effects of alpha(1)-adrenergic receptor blockers.
