Because cerebral palsy (CP) is a sufficiently common condition of childhood and adolescence, the number and needs of these children and young people with cerebral palsy are monitored by centres across the UK (Surman et al 2006) and Europe (Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe 2000). This article describes the epidemiology of CP in childhood using data derived from the Northern Ireland Cerebral Palsy Register, which is one of the longest running CP registers in Europe. The findings presented here are similar to, and representative of, the epidemiology of CP in the western world (Dolk et al 2006).

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are safe and effective medications for reducing a fever in children and young people and they are often administered together with a view to reducing a temperature quickly. National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines dictate that only one of these drugs should be given at a time because there is no evidence to suggest that simultaneous use is more effective. ⋯ However, the maximum dose of paracetamol was not administered. There is a need for more methodologically sound research that uses equivalent doses of both drugs.

This article reviews the evidence for using music therapy with young people who are supported by mechanical ventilation. The author argues that music therapy is essential for developing a holistic approach focusing on the developmental level of a child or young person, as well as being an inexpensive, non-pharmacological, non-invasive therapy, with significant physiological and psychological benefits. She argues that more research is needed in this area to develop a sound evidence base on which guidelines to inform practice could be based.

The differential diagnosis between orbital cellulitis and preseptal cellulitis is important as is the need to differentiate between an allergic response or infectious cellulitis of the eye. This article will examine the case of a 15-month-old boy who was brought to an emergency department with an oedematous right eye. The research about diagnosis and treatment will be evaluated and orbital cellulitis will be explored in more detail including the symptoms and complications.

There are 23 paediatric intensive care units (PICU) in the UK and 19 of these have a retrieval team responsible for the safe and uneventful transfer of critically ill children from referring hospitals. There are two established PICUs in University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust that work as a team. ⋯ At the time of writing this article there was no other PICU in the UK providing a dedicated paediatric clinical transport nurse service, whose main responsibility is the safe transfer of infants and children back to their local hospitals. This article will discuss the development of this service and the benefits to PICU and referral hospitals.
