Interrater variability of EEG interpretation in comatose cardiac arrest patients.
EEG is widely used to predict outcome in comatose cardiac arrest patients, but its value has been limited by lack of a uniform classification. We used the EEG terminology proposed by the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) to assess interrater variability in a cohort of cardiac arrest patients included in the Target Temperature Management trial. The main objective was to evaluate if malignant EEG-patterns could reliably be identified. ⋯ The establishment of strict criteria with high transferability between interpreters will increase the usefulness of routine EEG to assess neurological prognosis after cardiac arrest.

Effects of partial neuromuscular blockade on lateral spread response monitoring during microvascular decompression surgery.
We evaluated the effect of partial neuromuscular blockade (NMB) and no NMB on successful intraoperative monitoring of the lateral spread response (LSR) during microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery. ⋯ We suggested the availability of partial NMB for intraoperative LSR monitoring.

The effect of sleep restriction on laser evoked potentials, thermal sensory and pain thresholds and suprathreshold pain in healthy subjects.
Sleep restriction seems to change our experience of pain and reduce laser evoked potential (LEP) amplitudes. However, although LEP-habituation abnormalities have been described in painful conditions with comorbid sleep impairment, no study has previously measured the effect of sleep restriction on LEP-habituation, pain thresholds, and suprathreshold pain. ⋯ Since LEP-amplitude is known to reflect both CNS-pain-specific processing and cognitive attentive processing, our results suggest that hyperalgesia after sleep restriction might partly be caused by a reduction in cortical cognitive or perceptual mechanisms, rather than sensory amplification.

Inter-rater agreement on identification of electrographic seizures and periodic discharges in ICU EEG recordings.
This study investigated inter-rater agreement (IRA) among EEG experts for the identification of electrographic seizures and periodic discharges (PDs) in continuous ICU EEG recordings. ⋯ This study demonstrates more disagreement in the labeling of PDs in comparison to seizures. This may be improved by education about standard EEG nomenclature.

Transcranial motor evoked potentials during anesthesia with desflurane versus propofol--A prospective randomized trial.
This study aimed to evaluate differences in transcranial electrical motor evoked potential (tcMEP) amplitudes between desflurane/remifentanil and propofol/remifentanil anesthesia treatment plans in patients without preexisting motor deficits (PMDs) undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA). ⋯ TcMEPs were recorded in all patients regardless of the anesthesia regimen. In patients with initially small amplitudes, desflurane may limit tcMEP recording because it produces a remarkable amplitude reduction, even in patients without PMDs.
