Axonal excitability properties in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
To investigate axolemmal ion channel function in patients diagnosed with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ⋯ An increase in persistent Na+ conductances coupled with reduction in K+ currents would predispose axons of ALS patients to generation of fasciculations and cramps. Axonal excitability studies may provide insight into mechanisms responsible for motor neuron loss in ALS.

Sympathetic facilitation of hyperalgesia evoked from myofascial tender and trigger points in patients with unilateral shoulder pain.
To provide evidence for the sympathetic-sensory interaction within a trigger point, which may contribute to local and referred pain and sympathetic symptoms in myofascial pain syndrome. ⋯ Sympathetic hyperactivity needs to be considered during the clinical evaluation and management of myofascial pain syndrome.

Automated single-trial measurement of amplitude and latency of laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) using multiple linear regression.
Laser stimulation of Adelta-fibre nociceptors in the skin evokes nociceptive-specific brain responses (laser-evoked potentials, LEPs). The largest vertex complex (N2-P2) is widely used to assess nociceptive pathways in physiological and clinical studies. The aim of this study was to develop an automated method to measure amplitudes and latencies of the N2 and P2 peaks on a single-trial basis. ⋯ This method is particularly desirable in several experimental conditions (e.g. drug studies, correlations with experimental variables, simultaneous EEG/fMRI and low signal-to-noise ratio data) and in clinical practice. The described multiple linear regression approach can be easily implemented for measuring evoked potentials in other sensory modalities.

A comparison of subdermal wire electrodes with collodion-applied disk electrodes in long-term EEG recordings in ICU.
To compare long-term electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of standard collodion-applied scalp disk electrodes (SDEs) with newly developed subdermal wire electrodes (SWEs) in comatose intensive care unit (ICU) patients. ⋯ This is the first controlled study that demonstrates the superiority of SWEs compared to SDEs in an ICU population.

Cortical plasticity: effect of high and low intensity conditioning electrical stimulations (100 Hz) on SEPs to painful finger stimulation.
To study the effect of high-frequency (100 Hz) repetitive conditioning electrical stimulation (CES, 10 min) on human somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to evaluate if short-term cortical plasticity could be induced. ⋯ This study showed cortical plasticity induced by conditioning somatosensory stimulation.
