Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study[Effect of dapagliflozin in patients with type 2 diabetes who have inadequate glycaemic control with glimepiride].
Progressive deterioration of glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often requires treatment intensification. Dapagliflozin increases urinary glucose excretion by selective inhibition of renal sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2). We assessed the efficacy, safety and tolerability of dapagliflozin added to glimepiride in patients with uncontrolled T2DM. ⋯ Dapagliflozin added to glimepiride in patients with T2DM uncontrolled on sulphonylurea monotherapy significantly improved HbA1c, reduced weight and was generally well tolerated, although events suggestive of genital infections were reported more often in patients receiving dapagliflozin.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study[Dapagliflozin versus glipizide as add-on therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes who have inadequate glycemic control with metformin].
Although initially effective, sulfonylureas are associated with poor glycemic durability, weight gain, and hypoglycemia. Dapagliflozin, a selective inhibitor of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), reduces hyperglycemia by increasing urinary glucose excretion independent of insulin and may cause fewer of these adverse effects. We compared the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of dapagliflozin with the sulfonylurea glipizide in patients with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with metformin monotherapy. ⋯ Despite similar 52-week glycemic efficacy, dapagliflozin reduced weight and produced less hypoglycemia than glipizide in type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with metformin. Long-term studies are required to further evaluate genital and urinary tract infections with SGLT2 inhibitors.

Multicenter Study[Do female medical graduates have different views on professional work and workload compared to their male colleagues? Results of a multicenter postal survey in Germany].
This study investigated the career preferences of medical graduates with regard to discipline, final position, preferred area of work, and work load after the completion of postgraduate according to gender in Germany. ⋯ The results demonstrate the persistence of traditional role models among medical graduates. Men aim at leading positions in the hospital whereas women prefer lower hospital positions or outpatient practices. Women look for part-time jobs, at least temporarily for child rearing whereas men continue to prefer full-time jobs.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study[Effectiveness of telephone aftercare following a smoking cessation program for women on inpatient rehabilitation].
Rehabilitation centres for mothers are a suitable setting to offer smoking cessation treatment to these women. Telephone aftercare could enhance the effectiveness of an inpatient smoking cessation program. We investigated whether non-directive, supportive aftercare or a structured, smoking specific counselling give more benefit. ⋯ A structured telephone aftercare proves to be an effective intervention for women, which stabilizes the abstinence rate following a clinic based smoking cessation program.

Multicenter Study[Thromboembolic risk and prophylaxis in hospitalized surgical and internal medicine patients. German results of the international ENDORSE study].
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) leads to an increased morbidity in hospitalized patients. This multinational cross-sectional survey was designed to assess the prevalence of VTE risk factors and to determine the proportion of at-risk patients who receive effective VTE-prophylaxis. The results of the 16 participating German hospitals of the study are presented and compared with the international results. ⋯ In total, in comparison to other countries, Germany has a leading position in the implementation of international guidelines with regard to VTE prophylaxis. Whereas in a surgical ward effective VTE prophylaxis is consistently standard care, in the medical indications there is still room for improvement in terms of stratification of VTE risk and corresponding VTE-prophylaxis.
