Validity and Reliability of Pain and Behavioral Scales for Preterm Infants: A Systematic Review.
To systematically review the instruments used to assess behavior, stress, and/or pain in preterm newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and verify the validity and reliability of these instruments. ⋯ Considering the assessments of inter-rater reliability, internal consistency, and quality of scales by COSMIN, the BIPP, and PIPP-R, were the scales considered appropriate.

Chronic pain affects over 50 million Americans per year and costs society billions of dollars annually. It is widely accepted that the biomedical model is outdated and research on the biopsychosocial model of chronic pain has increased in recent years, concurrent with investigations into self-management of chronic pain. ⋯ This work describes the VHA Whole Health System, reviews the literature on alignment between the Whole Health System's Circle of Health and chronic pain, and explains how the VHA Whole Health model may be used as a method for organizing self-management strategies within a personal health plan in the context of chronic pain. Given the infusion of nurses throughout the healthcare system, nurses are in a unique position to champion this biopsychosocial-spiritual approach to care.

The knowledge and skills of pain management nurses positions them well to manage people's pain and provide critical services to patients with COVID-19. ⋯ Pain management nurses shared their professional and personal experiences and the support they received while managing patients' pain during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their experiences provided findings on the importance of pain management and to support nurses during personal and professional vulnerabilities during crises. Key recommendations on the care of patients' pain in future pandemics included developing expertise in pain management and health-related emergencies; engaging nurses in supportive mental health services, infectious disease testing, and vaccine efforts; and planning for surge capacity to reach out to underserved people living with pain.

Post-stroke pain in patients with an inability to communicate is not systematically assessed and therefore not sufficiently treated. This stresses the need to study pain assessment instruments that do not require good communication skills. ⋯ The PACSLAC-D captures pain in patients with aphasia who are unable to self-report, during ADL and physiotherapy, but may be less accurate during rest.

Prior work has demonstrated differences in the transcriptome between those with and without chronic musculoskeletal pain. ⋯ The findings from this study provided some preliminary support that pain-related gene expression is similar between individuals with and without dementia.
