Patient education is a core component of treating fibromyalgia and central sensitization disorders. We sought to evaluate whether patients with fibromyalgia prefer virtual or in-person educational classes as part of their treatment program, identify underlying factors with their educational modality choice, and highlight benefits or barriers associated with in-person or online educational sessions. ⋯ As virtual education platforms become more widely available and may be easier to access than in-person options, it is important to understand patient preferences, benefits, and disadvantages of educational modalities to ensure education and patient outcomes remain equitable.

It is unknown if central sensitization (CS)-related symptoms have an intermediate role that might explain how disability develops from pain after cervical spinal surgery. ⋯ The results revealed that neck and upper limb pain affected disabilities both directly and through CS-related symptoms. Future research should focus on the efficacy of biopsychosocial approaches for patients after cervical spine surgery with a high risk of disability due to CS-related symptoms.

Opioids can cause respiratory depression, which could lead to patient harm. The project site noted a gap in identifying and monitoring postsurgical thoracic patients at risk for opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD), so an evidence-based solution was sought. ⋯ Based on the results, implementing the PRODIGY risk prediction tool and capnography monitoring on at-risk patients may affect RRT activation in this population.

Improving Perioperative Pain Education for Patients Prescribed Opioids: An Integrative Review.
Postoperative pain is still inadequately managed for a significant number of patients despite the extensive use of opioids. Among several pain management strategies, patient education is a vital component of perioperative pain management. However, perioperative education practices remain inconsistent and incomplete in many hospital settings. ⋯ The findings from this review will help nursing professionals across surgical specialties identify effective educational approaches for patients prescribed opioids during the perioperative period. Developing education interventions based on these findings would enhance the quality and effectiveness of pain education, improve patient understanding and their preparedness to manage pain at home, and, ultimately, promote the safe use of opioids postoperatively.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Randomized Trial Examining Efficacy of Mentha piperita in Reducing Chronic Headache Discomfort in Youth.
Youth with chronic headache experience disruption to routine activities and require significant health care utilization. While interventions targeting a relaxation response have shown clinically significant benefit in headache outcomes, peppermint oil has not been evaluated for efficacy in a pediatric headache population. ⋯ A brief intervention intended to activate the relaxation response produced a subjective reduction in pain and anxiety. However, the addition of peppermint oil to a foot bath did not significantly improve pain or anxiety beyond the control condition.
