Improving Perioperative Pain Education for Patients Prescribed Opioids: An Integrative Review.
Postoperative pain is still inadequately managed for a significant number of patients despite the extensive use of opioids. Among several pain management strategies, patient education is a vital component of perioperative pain management. However, perioperative education practices remain inconsistent and incomplete in many hospital settings. ⋯ The findings from this review will help nursing professionals across surgical specialties identify effective educational approaches for patients prescribed opioids during the perioperative period. Developing education interventions based on these findings would enhance the quality and effectiveness of pain education, improve patient understanding and their preparedness to manage pain at home, and, ultimately, promote the safe use of opioids postoperatively.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Randomized Trial Examining Efficacy of Mentha piperita in Reducing Chronic Headache Discomfort in Youth.
Youth with chronic headache experience disruption to routine activities and require significant health care utilization. While interventions targeting a relaxation response have shown clinically significant benefit in headache outcomes, peppermint oil has not been evaluated for efficacy in a pediatric headache population. ⋯ A brief intervention intended to activate the relaxation response produced a subjective reduction in pain and anxiety. However, the addition of peppermint oil to a foot bath did not significantly improve pain or anxiety beyond the control condition.

Older adults have a high prevalence of chronic pain, which can have a substantial effect on their health and quality of life. Patients' use of effective pain relief methods is a central part of the treatment and management of chronic pain. The utilization of pain relief methods and their perceived effectiveness are important knowledge for treating and managing chronic pain for clinicians and older adults. However, this has been poorly investigated. ⋯ Knowledge about the actual use of pain treatment methods and the varied perceived effectiveness can guide clinicians in recommending new approaches or alternatives to manage chronic pain in older adults. How used methods are aligned with current clinical recommendations could be further explored in the future.

The opioid crisis in the United States is of public health significance, with an estimated 128 opioid overdose-related deaths per day in 2018 and a relapse rate of 90% or higher. This crisis persists despite the adoption of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), therefore, there is a need to prevent relapse. ⋯ Additional research is needed to ascertain other factors predicting relapse in patients with OUD in addiction treatment centers.

Pain felt in an amputated limb is quite common. Phantom pain affects the lives of individuals in many ways and can negatively affect the holistic well-being of individuals. Distant Reiki can be used in the management of these problems. ⋯ Distant Reiki has been found to be easy to administer, inexpensive, non-pharmacological, and appropriate for independent nursing practice to be effective in reducing phantom pain levels and increasing holistic well-being in people with limb amputation.
