Ropivacaine/Fentanyl vs. Bupivacaine/Fentanyl for Pain Control in Children after Thoracic Surgery: A Randomized Study.
Although bupivacaine remains a standard local anesthetic for postoperative epidural infusions in pediatric patients, it is increasingly being replaced with ropivacaine by many anesthesiologists. Ropivacaine is associated with less risk for cardiac and central nervous system toxicity. ⋯ Thoracic epidural analgesia using an RF and BF solution resulted in similar pain relief and adverse event profiles.

Effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation on Postoperative Pain and Patient Satisfaction.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on postoperative pain, changes in patients' vital signs, and patient satisfaction after inguinal herniorrhaphy. ⋯ After inguinal herniorrhaphy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation reduced postoperative pain without a negative impact on vital signs and increased patient satisfaction with nursing care.

Intranasal Vasopressin Relieves Orthopedic Pain After Surgery.
Orthopedic pain after surgery is very common and difficult to manage. Although intranasal arginine vasopressin (AVP) relieves headache (tension-type headache and migraine mostly), the effect of intranasal AVP on the orthopedic pain after surgery is unknown. ⋯ The findings contribute valuable information that intranasal AVP can treat orthopedic pain after surgery, and AVP could be an option for pain relief by intranasal administration.

Influencing Vaccinations: A Buzzy Approach to Ease the Discomfort of a Needle Stick-a Prospective, Randomized Controlled Trial.
The rate of annual influenza immunization in both the general public and health care workers is less than desirable. Mechanisms to improve compliance with recommendations are needed; prevention of immunization site pain has been suggested as a viable route because fear of pain and needles has been cited as a barrier. ⋯ These results suggest that Buzzy reduced pain experienced by adults undergoing annual influenza vaccination and may improve overall experience. Buzzy can be used in adult patients to reduce pain during immunization and is especially effective in those with high levels of anxiety.

Oral Glucose and Listening to Lullaby to Decrease Pain in Preterm Infants Supported with NCPAP: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Preterm infants spend the early days of their lives in neonatal intensive care units, where they undergo many minor painful procedures. There are many nonpharmacologic methods that can effectively reduce the pain response of neonates who undergo routine procedures. ⋯ The findings suggest that pain could be reduced significantly in preterm infants after the suggested intervention, although further studies are required to identify the benefits of lullabies or glucose in infants during other painful procedures.
