Comparison of the efficacy and safety of different doses of propacetamol for postoperative pain control after breast surgery.
Intravenous propacetamol has been shown to be effective for postoperative pain control. However, the recommendations regarding propacetamol doses for pain control are vague. The present study was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of propacetamol at a dose of 1 g or 2 g. ⋯ There were no differences in efficacy variables, including visual analog scale, the 4-point categorical scale, and requests for rescue analgesia, between propacetamol doses of 1 g and 2 g. Adverse events were similar in the two groups. Intravenous propacetamol at a dose of 2 g is not superior to the lower dose of 1 g with regard to postoperative analgesia or the incidence of side effects in breast-conserving surgery.

Can presence of a dog reduce pain and distress in children during venipuncture?
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of animal-assisted intervention as distraction for reducing children's pain and distress before, during, and after standard blood collection procedure. Fifty children (ages 4-11 years) undergoing venipuncture were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG; n = 25) or to the control group (CG; n = 25). The blood collection procedure was carried on the children in the EG arm in the presence of a dog, whereas no dog was present when venipuncture was conducted on children in CG. ⋯ Furthermore, cortisol levels were lower in the EG group compared with the CG group. There were no significant differences in pain ratings and in the level of parental anxiety. It appears that the presence of dogs during blood draw procedures reduces distress in children.

Effectiveness of external cold and vibration for procedural pain relief during peripheral intravenous cannulation in pediatric patients.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of external cold and vibration stimulation via Buzzy on the pain and anxiety level of children during peripheral intravenous (IV) cannulation. This study was a prospective, randomized controlled trial. The sample consisted of 176 children ages 7 to 12 years who were randomly assigned to two groups: a control group that received no peripheral IV cannulation intervention and an experimental group that received external cold and vibration via Buzzy. ⋯ Comparison of the two groups showed significantly lower pain and anxiety levels in the experimental group than in the control group during the peripheral IV cannulation. Buzzy can be considered to provide an effective combination of coldness and vibration. This method can be used during pediatric peripheral IV cannulation by pediatric nurses.

Acupoint stimulation to improve analgesia quality for lumbar spine surgical patients.
Lumbar spine surgery has a high incidence of postoperative pain, but this pain is treatable through many methods, including patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). Acupoint stimulation could be considered an adjunct to PCA, improving the effectiveness of analgesia for patients recovering from lumbar spine surgery. The current study aimed to examine the effect of acupoint stimulation with PCA on improving analgesia quality after lumbar spine surgery. ⋯ Also found a significant difference among the 3 groups in analgesic consumption and the severity of PONV in the first 72 hours after surgery. The current study shows that the combination of auricular acupressure and TEAS reduced pain intensity, morphine consumption, and PONV severity. Acupoint stimulation could be considered a multimodal analgesia method and an adjunct to PCA for lumbar spine surgery patients.

Comparison of the effect of ginger and zinc sulfate on primary dysmenorrhea: a placebo-controlled randomized trial.
Primary dysmenorrhea is common among young women and results in their incapacitation; it can be accompanied by various symptoms that can disrupt their lives. The aim of this randomized trial was to compare the effect of ginger, zinc sulfate, and placebo on the severity of primary dysmenorrhea in young women. One hundred and fifty high school students were recruited. ⋯ The severity of pain was significantly different between, before, and after the intervention in both the ginger and the zinc sulfate groups (p < .001). Compared with the placebo receiving group, participants receiving ginger and zinc sulfate reported more alleviation of pain during the intervention (p < .05). Ginger and zinc sulfate had similar positive effects on the improvement of primary dysmenorrheal pain in young women.
