Comparing Analgesia on an As-Needed Basis to Traditional Intravenous Patient-Controlled Analgesia Within Fast-Track Orthopedic Procedures: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
The aim was to determine if the use of intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IVPCA) in a fast-track joint replacement program is associated with increased use of perioperative opioid consumption and increased length of hospital stay. ⋯ IVPCA was associated with nonsignificant reduction in opioid exposure in elective total knee arthroplasty surgery within 48 hours. Neither group was superior in terms of length of hospital stay, opioid related side-effects, pain scores, and patient satisfaction.

Use of Virtual Reality for Reducing Pain and Anxiety After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of virtual reality on pain and anxiety in patients who had undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. ⋯ Virtual reality can effectively reduce pain and anxiety in patients who have undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in intensive care units.

Effectiveness of a Virtual Program on Nurses' Pain-Related Knowledge and Pain-Measurement Skills.
Aim: To test whether a comprehensive virtual program for using pain scales to manage neonatal pain improved nurses' knowledge and skill acquisition. ⋯ The results showed that the e-learning program improved nurses' neonatal pain knowledge and pain-measurement skills compared with no training.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Pain, Opioid Withdrawal, and Related Symptoms: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.
Pain, drug cravings, and opioid withdrawal symptoms can interfere with substance use disorder or opioid tapering treatment goals. ⋯ These pilot results provide evidence to support a fully powered study of HBOT as a potential treatment adjunct for adults receiving methadone for opioid use disorder. Trends towards symptom improvements were detected from pre- to post-HBOT in the full treatment arm versus sham condition. More research into novel non-pharmacologic options to relieve distressing symptoms related to pain and opioid use disorder is essential to improve clinical outcomes.

Psychosocial and Sensory Factors Contribute to Self-Reported Pain and Quality of Life in Young Adults with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Psychosocial and sensory factors, including anxiety, depression, and pressure pain threshold have been used to cluster chronic symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study examined the contribution of psychosocial sensory factors on pain interference and quality of life (QOL) in this population. ⋯ Psychosocial factors including coping and self-efficacy, and quantitative sensory testing factors significantly correlate with self-reported pain and QOL among young adults with IBS. This preliminary research calls for further interventional studies that target personalized psychosocial and quantitative sensory factors to improve pain management and quality of life in IBS patients.
