Acute Postoperative Pain Impact Trajectories and Factors Contributing to Trajectory Membership.
Ongoing postoperative pain assessments are vital to optimizing pain management and attenuating the development of poor health outcomes after surgery. This study aimed to characterize acute multidimensional trajectories of pain impact on physical function, sleep, mood, and stress and to examine clinical characteristics and demographics associated with trajectory membership. Additionally, this study compared levels of pain intensity and prescription opioid use at 2 weeks and 1 month postoperatively across acute symptom trajectories. ⋯ Variation in acute postoperative pain impact on activity, sleep, mood, and stress exists. Given the complex nature of patients' postoperative pain experiences, understanding how psychosocial presentations acutely change throughout hospitalization could assist in guiding clinicians' treatment choices and risk assessments.

Chemical Neurolysis of the Genicular Nerves for Chronic Refractory Knee Pain: an Observational Cohort Study.
Evaluate outcomes of genicular nerve chemical neurolysis (GChN) in a real-world population with chronic knee pain. ⋯ GChN could provide a robust and durable treatment effect in a subset of individuals with chronic knee pain with complicating factors traditionally associated with poor treatment outcomes, such as those with pain refractory to radiofrequency ablation or those who have undergone arthroplasty.

Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is performed to relieve head, face, neck, or upper limb pain, and several non-pain indications for performing this block have emerged over the years. To date, there has been no attempt to synthesize evidence on SGB for treating non-pain indications. This scoping review presents a summary of the efficacy and adverse effects of SGB when performed for 6 non-pain indications. ⋯ SGB can be considered for obtunding cardiovascular sympathetic stimulation and stress response, reducing vascular tone to improve vascular insufficiency in the limbs and perioperative hemodynamic stability, and alleviating hot flashes in menopause, in conditions refractory to conventional medical management.

Prayer is a devotional practice used across religious traditions to commune with the sacred and has been used as a coping strategy for pain. Previous research on prayer as a pain coping strategy has had mixed results, with prayer associated with both greater and lesser pain depending on prayer type. To date, there has been only 1 measure of pain-related prayer, the prayer subscale of the Coping Strategies Questionnaire-Revised, which measures solely passive prayer, neglecting other types of prayer (eg, active and neutral). To better understand the relationship between pain and prayer, a comprehensive measure of prayer for pain is needed. The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Pain-related PRAYER Scale (PPRAYERS), a questionnaire exploring active, passive, and neutral petitionary prayers to God or a higher power in response to pain. ⋯ These results provide preliminary validation for PPRAYERS, a novel measure for pain-related prayer.
