Bevacizumab inhibits corneal neovascularization in an alkali burn induced model of corneal angiogenesis.
New and uncontrolled blood vessel development in the cornea is a pivotal process in the pathogenesis of several corneal diseases. These corneal diseases may finally cause blindness and managing them therapeutically is problematic. The data supporting a causal role for vascular endothelial growth factor in corneal neovascularization are extensive. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of subconjunctival bevacizumab (Avastin) on experimental corneal neovascularization in rabbits. ⋯ Local injection of bevacizumab has a significant effect on inhibition of alkali burn-induced corneal neovascularization. This shows the potential value of bevacizumab in the treatment of corneal neovascularization.

Eye disease and care at hospital clinics in Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.
To obtain eye disease and care data to assist with service planning in Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. ⋯ This methodology enabled quick and cost-efficient collection of data about hospital eye services, the conditions diagnosed and treated, and the outcome of treatment. It could easily be repeated by local clinicians to measure the impact of service planning and implementation. In the four countries audited, the management of, and intervention outcomes for, cataract, refractive error, diabetic retinopathy and trauma need attention.

Distance refractive error among Aboriginal people attending eye clinics in remote South Australia.
To determine the prevalence of distance refractive error among Aboriginal people attending eye clinics in remote South Australia. ⋯ There continues to be a level of uncorrected distance refractive error within these patients. This represents a need to screen for refractive error among Aboriginal people in remote locations and to provide them with appropriate spectacle correction.
