ReviewUnderstanding the burden of trauma and victimization among American Indian and Alaska native elders: historical trauma as an element of poly-victimization.
Research on recognition of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and poly-victimization has transformed our understanding of violence and trauma exposure. Both concepts point to the importance of understanding the cumulative burden of trauma and the interconnections among forms of violence and abuse. ⋯ We call for the integration of historical trauma into the poly-victimization framework for AI/AN communities in order to more accurately capture the true burden of victimization among AI/AN peoples. Future research, prevention, and intervention can better incorporate historical trauma and we provide suggestions for doing so, including adding items on historical trauma to poly-victimization surveys and creating programs to promote cultural connectedness.

ReviewTreating traumatized children: current status and future directions.
Empirical knowledge regarding effective treatments for traumatized children has increased in the past decade, yet much still remains unknown. There is growing support for the efficacy of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) for treating PTSD, depressive, and behavioral problems in sexually abused children, and evidence that suggests that this treatment is effective for children exposed to other types of trauma, and for multiply traumatized children. ⋯ No empirical studies have evaluated the efficacy of early interventions provided to children in the acute aftermath of mass disasters or terrorist acts. More research is needed to test potentially effective treatments for traumatized children, and to identify optimal methods for disseminating and implementing evidence-based treatments to community practitioners.
