ReviewThe effectiveness of therapeutic patient education on adherence to oral anti-cancer medicines in adult cancer patients in ambulatory care settings: a systematic review.
Adherence to oral cancer medicines is a challenge for adult patients with cancer. Education specifically tailored for an individual patient with cancer may improve adherence. Therapeutic patient education when utilized effectively may maximize health outcomes and positively affect the quality of life of adult patients with cancer. Currently, there are no published systematic reviews specific to the effectiveness of therapeutic patient education on improvement of oral anti-cancer medicines adherence in patients with cancer. ⋯ Clinical trials with larger sample sizes, standardization of content, comparing specific adherence education or tailored education interventions are needed.

ReviewThe effect of insulin therapy algorithms on blood glucose levels in patients following cardiac surgery: A systematic review.
A number of insulin infusion algorithms, with varying methods and effects, have been developed to guide the management of postoperative hyperglycemia in critically ill patients. ⋯ Future studies to compare the methods of computer calculator directed CII to paper nomogram directed CII should be undertaken using more rigorous research designs such as randomized controlled trials with sufficiently powered sample sizes. Definitions for both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia should be standardized.

ReviewThe effectiveness of tools used to evaluate successful critical decision making skills for applicants to healthcare graduate educational programs: a systematic review.
Students leave healthcare academic programs for a variety of reasons. When they attrite, it is disappointing for the student as well as their faculty. Advanced practice nursing and other healthcare professions require not only extensive academic preparation, but also the ability to critically evaluate patient care situations. The ability to critically evaluate a situation is not innate. Critical decision making skills are high level skills that are difficult to assess. For the purpose of this review, critical decision making and critical thinking skills refer to the same constructs and will be referred to globally as critical decision making skills. ⋯ Primary studies should be funded and performed to assess the use of unique tools in assessing critical thinking in graduate healthcare students.

ReviewThe association between suicidality and treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in older people with major depression: a systematic review.
Suicide among the elderly is an emerging public health issue. In Australia, suicide is a leading cause of death, most notably amongst elderly men over the age of 75. Depression is one of the main causes of suicide in older people. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are considered to be a safe pharmacological therapy in the management of depression in adults. The risk of suicidality/suicide associated with the use of antidepressants in older people is unclear. ⋯ Following critical appraisal, eight randomized controlled trials and five observational studies (i.e. population cohort and retrospective case control studies) with data on suicide-related events were included in the systematic review.
