Tool to improve patient-provider interactions in adult primary care: Randomized controlled pilot study.
To assess whether an intervention to help patients prioritize goals for their visit would improve patient-provider communication and clinical outcomes. ⋯ A single previsit tool designed to prompt patients to set a prioritized agenda improved patient activation during the visit, but did not affect the quality of the interaction or postvisit patient-centred outcomes.

Lung cancer screening primer: Key information for primary care providers.
To review new evidence reported since the 2016 publication of the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care recommendations and to summarize key facets of lung cancer screening to better equip primary care providers (PCPs) in anticipation of wider implementation of the recommendations. ⋯ Lung cancer screening, with its embedded emphasis on smoking cessation, is an excellent addition to PCPs' preventive health care tools. The implementation of formal and pilot lung cancer screening programs across Canada means that PCPs will be increasingly required to counsel their patients around the uptake of lung cancer screening.

Formula choices in infants with cow's milk allergy.
I frequently encounter infants with symptoms suggestive of allergy after being introduced to standard cow's milk formula. Parents are concerned and ask for recommendations regarding formula alternatives. Which formulas are best for children with cow's milk allergy? ⋯ Cow's milk allergy is common, and the criterion standard for diagnosis is elimination, provocation (with a double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge protocol), and re-elimination. The allergy is treated by eliminating cow's milk protein from the diet. Formula alternatives include hydrolyzed cow's milk formula, rice-based formula, soy-based formula, and amino acid-based formula, which are all nutritionally adequate alternatives to cow's milk formula. Symptom severity, patient preference, cost, and efficacy are factors to be considered when choosing an alternative.

Buprenorphine in the emergency department: Randomized clinical controlled trial of clonidine versus buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid withdrawal.
To compare buprenorphine to clonidine for the treatment of opioid withdrawal in the emergency department (ED) and to study the effect assigned treatment medication had on longer-term addiction treatment outcomes. ⋯ When opioid withdrawal is treated with buprenorphine in the ED, patients are more likely to be receiving opioid agonist treatment and connected with addiction treatment 1 month later.

Colorectal cancer risk information presented by a nonphysician assistant does not increase screening rates.
To determine the effectiveness of presenting individualized colorectal cancer (CRC) risk information for increasing CRC screening rates in primary care patients at above-average risk of CRC. ⋯ Presentation of individualized CRC risk information by a nonphysician assistant as a decision aid did not result in higher CRC screening rates in primary care patients compared with presentation of general CRC screening information. Future research is needed to determine if physician presentation of CRC risk information would result in increased screening rates compared with research assistant presentation.
