Sponsorship of physical activity programs by the sweetened beverages industry: public health or public relations?
The growing evidence on the association between consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, obesity and other chronic diseases has highlighted the need to implement policy actions that go beyond programs exclusively focused on individual responsibility. In order to protect their commercial goals in Latin America, the sugar-sweetened beverage industry practices intense lobbying at high government levels in several countries across the region. ⋯ These efforts, although appearing altruistic, are intended to improve the industry's public image and increase political influence in order to block regulations counter to their interests. If this industry wants to contribute to human well being, as it has publicly stated, it should avoid blocking legislative actions intended to regulate the marketing, advertising and sale of their products.

Comparative StudyContextual determinants of neonatal mortality using two analysis methods, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
To analyze neonatal mortality determinants using multilevel logistic regression and classic hierarchical models. ⋯ The use of multilevel models showed a small effect of contextual determinants on the neonatal mortality rate. There was found a positive association with the poverty rate in the general model, and the proportion of households with water supply among preterm newborns.

Family income, food prices, and household purchases of fruits and vegetables in Brazil.
To analyze the influence of family income and food prices on the participation of fruits and vegetables in the food purchases of Brazilian households. ⋯ Reducing the price of fruit and vegetables, either by supporting their production or through fiscal measures, is a promising public policy instrument, capable of increasing the participation of these foods in the diet of the Brazilian population.

Performance of a Brazilian population on the test of functional health literacy in adults.
To analyze the scoring obtained by an instrument, which evaluates the ability to read and understand items in the health care setting, according to education and age. ⋯ The short version of the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults was a suitable tool to assess health literacy in the study population. The high number of individuals classified as functional illiterates in this test highlights the importance of special assistance to help them properly understand directions for healthcare.
