Case Reports Retracted PublicationParadoxical cerebral arterial embolization of cement during intraoperative vertebroplasty: case report.
Paradoxical cerebral embolism of cement occurred in a 78-year-old woman after cement-assisted transpedicular spinal fixation surgery. Multiple pulmonary emboli of polymethylmethacrylate precipitated pulmonary hypertension and right-to-left shunting into the systemic circulation through a patent foramen ovale. This rare complication occurred because of failure to recognize venous migration of cement during the procedure and the injection of multiple levels in one setting. Although this was an open procedure, the technical aspects were the same as for vertebroplasty and the precautions should be applied to percutaneous vertebroplasty.

Retraction Of PublicationRetracted: Considerations in patients undergoing implantation of a biventricular pacemaker.
To compare hemodynamics and oxygenation in patients with congestive heart failure and broad QRS complexes before and with biventricular DDD pacing and to report experience with this new procedure. ⋯ There was no acute intraoperative improvement of hemodynamics except increased mean arterial pressure with biventricular pacing. Left ventricular performance seemed to improve with biventricular pacing in some patients. These results might be due to a nonoptimized atrioventricular delay. Postoperatively, atrioventricular delay was individually programmed for each patient by Doppler transmitral flow patterns.

Comparative Study Retracted PublicationDoes coagulation differ between elderly and younger patients undergoing cardiac surgery?
Multiple improvements allow cardiac surgery in an increasingly older population. It is still unclear whether perioperative hemostasis differs between elderly and younger patients. ⋯ Elderly cardiac surgery patients already showed moderately altered coagulation prior to surgery. Thus elderly patients may be at risk of developing postoperative alterations in hemostasis on the ICU. The exact reasons for the impaired coagulation in the elderly remains to be determined.

Retracted PublicationDoes age affect liver function and the hepatic acute phase response after major abdominal surgery?
The liver plays a key role in the inflammatory response during major surgery or infection. The influence of age on liver function and hepatic acute phase protein (APP) synthesis should be serially studied in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. ⋯ Our observations suggest that the postoperative hepatic acute phase response is reduced in elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. The decreased release of liver-synthesized APPs was associated with an impaired hepatocyte function and a disturbance of hepatocellular integrity. Further work needs to be done to determine whether these findings might have an impact on the incidence of postoperative septic complications or prognostic significance for survival in aged patients.
