Inverse relation between Braak stage and cerebrovascular pathology in Alzheimer predominant dementia.
The most common neuropathological substrates of dementia are Alzheimer's disease, cerebrovascular disease, and dementia with Lewy bodies. A preliminary, retrospective postmortem analysis was performed of the relative burden of each pathology in 25 patients with predominantly Alzheimer's disease-type dementia. Log linear modelling was used to assess the relations between ApoE genotype, Alzheimer's disease, and cerebrovascular disease pathology scores. ⋯ No evidence was found for an association between possession of the ApoE-epsilon4 allele and any one pathological variable over another. In this series most brains from patients with dementia for which Alzheimer's disease is the predominant neuropathological substrate also harboured significant cerebrovascular disease or dementia with Lewy bodies. The data suggest that these diseases are perhaps pathogenetically distinct, yet conspire to produce the dementing phenotype.

The relationship between apo E genotypes and risk of dementia in Down syndrome is not clear. Accordingly, we have analysed this locus in 20 demented and 25 nondemented individuals with Down syndrome and combined these data with other studies in a meta-analysis. ⋯ An additional parallel with late-onset Alzheimer's disease was shown by the apo epsilon2 allele, which was associated with decreased dementia risk in Down syndrome (odds ratio for apo epsilon2/epsilon2 + epsilon2/epsilon3 = 0.37 (95% CI 0.14-0. 96)). Thus, apo E genotypes are associated with similar risk effects in Down syndrome dementia and late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer disease (AD) neuropathology is present in Down syndrome (DS) after age 35, but dementia onset varies from ages 40 to 70 years. Because of small sample sizes and nonuniform determination of dementia, previous studies produced differing results on the influence of APOE subtypes on AD in DS. ⋯ The epsilon2 allele confers a protective effect, and women with DS have an increased risk for AD, as in the general population. In this sample, epsilon4 does not confer a significantly increased risk for AD in DS.

Association of polymorphism of apolipoprotein E gene with coronary heart disease in Han Chinese.
To investigate the association between apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene polymorphism and coronary heart disease(CHD) in Han Chinese. ⋯ Hot start PCR assay is considered a rapid and simple technique for apoE genotyping. This method is suitable for routine laboratories and large scale population studies. Genetic polymorphism of the apoE gene might contribute to the determination of serum lipid profile and the development of CHD among Han Chinese.

Apolipoprotein E-epsilon4 genotype predicts a poor outcome in survivors of traumatic brain injury.
To determine the ability of apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes to predict days of unconsciousness and a suboptimal functional outcome in traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors. ⋯ The results demonstrate a strong association between the APOE-epsilon4 allele and a poor clinical outcome, implying genetic susceptibility to the effect of brain injury. Additional studies of TBI patients are warranted to confirm their findings.
