Multicenter StudyThe epidemiology of ventilator-associated pneumonia in a network of community hospitals: a prospective multicenter study.
To describe the epidemiology of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in community hospitals. ⋯ VAP incidence was inversely associated with size of hospital. VAP in community hospitals was frequently caused by MRSA. Importantly, predictors of VAP incidence in tertiary care hospitals such as VUR may not be predictive in community hospitals with few ventilated patients.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyMorbidity and mortality among newly hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumococcal bacteremia: a retrospective cohort study in three teaching hospitals in Japan.
Although the mortality rate of pneumococcal bacteremia has been intensively studied, few studies have examined how it influences patient morbidity. This study aimed to fill this research gap by clarifying the impact of pneumococcal bacteremia on mortality and morbidity. ⋯ Our study showed that a high proportion of inpatient morbidity and mortality occurs in adult patients with pneumococcal bacteremia, especially among those aged ≥ 75 years.

Observation status, in contrast to inpatient status, is a billing designation for hospital payment. Observation-status stays are presumed to be shorter and less resource-intensive, but utilization for pediatric observation-status stays has not been studied. The goal of this study was to describe resource utilization characteristics for patients in observation and inpatient status in a national cohort of hospitalized children in the Pediatric Health Information System. ⋯ Variability in use of observation status with large overlap in costs and potential lower reimbursement compared with inpatient status calls into question the utility of segmenting patients according to billing status and highlights a financial risk for institutions with a high volume of pediatric patients in observation status.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyAdverse events rates and risk factors in adults undergoing cardiac catheterization at pediatric hospitals--results from the C3PO.
Determine the frequency and risk factors for adverse events (AE) for adults undergoing cardiac catheterization at pediatric hospitals. ⋯ Adults undergoing catheterization at pediatric hospitals encountered AE less frequently than children did. The congenital heart disease adjustment for risk method for adults with congenital heart disease is a new tool for assessing procedural risk in adult patients.

Trends in the management of viral meningitis at United States children's hospitals.
To determine trends in the diagnosis and management of children with viral meningitis at US children's hospitals. ⋯ Between 2005 and 2011, viral meningitis diagnoses at US children's hospitals declined. However, most of these children are hospitalized, and the cost for caring for these children remains considerable.
