The emergency department (ED) offers an opportunity to initiate palliative care for older adults with serious, life-limiting illness. ⋯ This multicomponent intervention to initiate palliative care in the ED did not have an effect on hospital admission, subsequent health care use, or short-term mortality in older adults with serious, life-limiting illness.

Ambient air pollution and risk of hospital admission due to acute and chronic coronary syndromes: a time-stratified case-crossover study in the 3 largest urban agglomerations in Poland.
Short-term exposure to air pollution may worsen the course of ischemic heart disease (IHD), causing acute and chronic coronary syndromes. ⋯ The exposure to PM10, PM2.5, and NO2 is associated with an increased short-term risk of hospital admission due to acute and chronic coronary syndromes.

Retrospective cohort study. ⋯ Patients from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities experience longer hospitalizations and are more likely to be discharged to a rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility following PCDF. Social and economic barriers should be addressed as part of presurgical counseling and planning in elective spine surgery to mitigate these disparities and improve the quality and value of health care delivery, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Postoperative Outcomes Following Lung Resection Performed at Private Equity-Acquired Hospitals.
Private equity acquisition of hospitals performing complex operations is increasingly prevalent in the United States healthcare landscape. While comparative health outcomes for common medical conditions have been investigated, the quality of thoracic surgical care in private equity-acquired hospitals is unknown. ⋯ These findings raise concern that private equity-acquired hospitals may provide lower-quality care for patients undergoing common thoracic procedures. Underlying structural factors may contribute to these differences. This motivates further investigation of specialty surgical care performed at private equity-acquired health institutions.
