Emergency catheter cricothyroidotomy often fails. Case reports have concentrated on kinking and displacement of the catheter as the major causes. We investigated catheter tip penetration of the trachea. ⋯ Using the same methodology, the stylet was able to be placed and prevented blockage at all angles of insertion. Mucosal trauma and submucosal gas injection occurred on insertions at 90° and 75°. Our results should guide further stylet design.

Role of contextualizing a crisis scenario on the performance of a cricothyrotomy procedural task.
Simulation is an important alternative to evaluate cricothyrotomy, a rare life-saving procedure. This crossover study aimed to determine whether contextualization of a crisis scenario would impact the performance of a cricothyrotomy procedural task. ⋯ Contextualization of a crisis scenario did not affect the performance of a cricothyrotomy procedural task on a tissue-mannequin simulator. These findings may have implications when considering the feasibility and cost-effectiveness for assessing the performance of cricothyrotomy procedural tasks.

To evaluate the acceptability of an educational project using A porcine model of airway for teaching surgical cricothyroidotomy to medical students and medical residents at a university hospital in southern Brazil. ⋯ the training of surgical cricothyroidotomy with a porcine model showed good acceptance among medical students and residents of this institution.

ReviewThe role of cricothyrotomy, tracheostomy, and percutaneous tracheostomy in airway management.
Cricothyrotomy, percutaneous dilation tracheostomy, and surgical tracheostomy are cost-effective and safe techniques employed in the management of critically ill patients requiring insertion of an artificial airway. These procedures have been well characterized and studied in the surgical, emergency medicine, and critical care literature. This article focuses on the role of each of these modalities in airway management, specifically comparing the data for each procedure in regard to procedural outcomes. The authors discuss the techniques available and the relevant background data regarding choice of each method and its integration into clinical practice.
