Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune cholestasis liver disease. There were many studies comparing a combination of glucocorticoids and/or immunosuppressants to a single UDCA therapy in PBC patients, while the literature demonstrated divergent finds. To evaluate the effectiveness of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) combined with glucocorticoids and (or) immunosuppressants on biochemistry, immunology, histology, clinical symptoms, and adverse reactions of PBC from the perspective of evidence-based medicine. ⋯ Overall, the combination therapy showed no improvement in key biochemical parameters and limited improvement in liver pathology. Besides, the side effects were more serious. Therefore, in the current treatment regimen, it is not recommended for PBC patients.

Review Meta AnalysisUrsodeoxycholic acid for cystic fibrosis-related liver disease.
Abnormal biliary secretion leads to the thickening of bile and the formation of plugs within the bile ducts; the consequent obstruction and abnormal bile flow ultimately results in the development of cystic fibrosis-related liver disease. This condition peaks in adolescence with up to 20% of adolescents with cystic fibrosis developing chronic liver disease. Early changes in the liver may ultimately result in end-stage liver disease with people needing transplantation. One therapeutic option currently used is ursodeoxycholic acid. This is an update of a previous review. ⋯ There are few trials assessing the effectiveness of ursodeoxycholic acid. The quality of the evidence identified ranged from low to very low. There is currently insufficient evidence to justify its routine use in cystic fibrosis.

Evaluating the effectiveness and safety of ursodeoxycholic acid in treatment of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: A meta-analysis (a prisma-compliant study).
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a specific pregnancy-related disorder without standard medical therapies. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is the most used medicine, but the efficacy and safety of UDCA remain uncertain. Several meta-analyses had been made to assess the effects of UDCA in ICP. However, the samples were not large enough to convince obstetricians to use UDCA. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects and safety of UDCA in patients with ICP, which included only randomized controlled trials (RCTs). ⋯ UDCA is effective and safe to improve pruritus and liver function in ICP. UDCA also reduced adverse maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnant women with ICP.

Review Meta AnalysisInterventions for prophylaxis of hepatic veno-occlusive disease in people undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a severe complication after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Different drugs with different mechanisms of action have been tried in HSCT recipients to prevent hepatic VOD. However, it is uncertain whether high-quality evidence exists to support any prophylactic therapy. ⋯ There is low or very low quality evidence that ursodeoxycholic acid may reduce the incidence of hepatic VOD, all-cause mortality and mortality due to VOD in HSCT recipients. However, the optimal regimen is not well-defined. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of heparin, LMWH, defibrotide, glutamine, FFP, antithrombin III, and PGE1. Further high-quality RCTs are needed.
