The objective of the study was to determine the clinical and physiologic benefits of noninvasive respiratory support (NRS) (continuous positive airway pressure or noninvasive positive pressure ventilation) for infants with a Pierre Robin sequence (PRS). ⋯ NRS is able to improve breathing patterns and respiratory outcomes for infants with severe upper airway obstruction attributable to a PRS, which supports its use as a first-line treatment.

Case ReportsAirway management in two of newborns with Pierre Robin Sequence: the use of disposable vs multiple use LMA for fiberoptic intubation.
In this article, we discuss the use of LMAs as a conduit to intubate the trachea of two Pierre Robin Sequence infants. Multiple use LMAs will admit larger diameter tracheal tubes (TT) than their disposable counterparts. Increased friction with the surface of the TT makes passing even small diameter tubes through the lumen of the disposable LMA difficult.

Case Reports[The Tübingen palatal plate--an innovative therapeutic concept in Pierre-Robin sequence].
Infants with Pierre-Robin sequence (PRS) may suffer severe upper airway obstruction resulting in hypoxemia that is difficult to treat. We are currently evaluating a new therapeutic approach involving an oral appliance that widens the pharynx by pulling the base of the tongue forward using a preepiglottic baton. Here we present a patient treated with this device who showed a decrease in his desaturation index from 50 to < 1.

Several methods of treating babies with Pierre Robin sequence have been described since the condition itself was first documented in 1923. The main aim of treatment has been to relieve upper airway obstruction. Treatment methods used range from positioning of the baby to invasive surgery. The aim of this article was to describe the assessment, treatment, and monitoring methods used for babies referred with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS). ⋯ Relieving airway obstruction by NPA is an effective and safe treatment for babies with PRS until they have grown out of their respiratory and feeding difficulties. It avoids the need for surgery and can be used on neonatal wards using the monitoring described.
