Cosmetic outcomes of facial lacerations repaired with tissue-adhesive, absorbable, and nonabsorbable sutures.
The objective of this study was to compare the 9- to 12-month cosmetic outcome of facial lacerations closed with rapid-absorbing gut suture (RG), octylcyanoacrylate (OC), or nylon suture (NL). We hypothesized that no important differences would exist between these methods. This prospective, randomized study enrolled consecutive patients with facial lacerations when experienced physician assistants were on duty for wound closure. ⋯ Nine-month follow up occurred in 84 patients. The maximum difference within each evaluator's set of scores was 3.6 mm, well below the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) of 10 to 15 mm. We did not detect clinically important differences in cosmetic outcome at 9 to 12 months in patients with facial lacerations closed with RG, OC, or NL, although RG or OC could be preferred to eliminate follow-up visits for suture removal.

Skin closure in carpal tunnel surgery: a prospective comparative study between nylon, polyglactin 910 and stainless steel sutures.
To compare the cosmetic outcome, pain and tenderness around the operation scar of carpal tunnel syndrome surgery using either nylon, polyglactin 910 or stainless steel sutures for skin closure. ⋯ Nylon and stainless steel sutures are both suitable for skin closure after carpal tunnel surgery. Based on this study, absorbable vicryl sutures should not be used, since the incidence of infections and the presence of suture granulomas was much higher than in the nylon and steel suture groups.

Adjustable-suture techniques are commonly used to decrease the reoperation rate in adults undergoing strabismus surgery, but they are infrequently used in children because of the difficulty of performing adjustments on a conscious child. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a new technique for using adjustable sutures in children, which makes the second stage of the procedure unnecessary if no adjustment is needed. ⋯ This new adjustable-suture technique was associated with excellent short-term eye alignment. It is particularly suited for pediatric surgery because it eliminates the necessity of further manipulation of children who do not require adjustment.

Comparative StudyBridging short nerve defects by direct repair under tension, nerve grafts or longitudinal sutures.
To compare the longitudinal suture model for bridging nerve defects with direct approximation under tension or with autologuos nerve grafting. ⋯ Longitudinal sutures can be used to bridge short nerve defects and could be an alternative to nerve grafting.

Selective non-stapling of the mesh during unilateral endoscopic total extraperitoneal inguinal hernioplasty (TEP) may reduce postoperative pain and morbidity rate. ⋯ Selective non-stapling of the mesh did not confer short-term benefits, such as reduced postoperative pain and morbidity, compared with those who had routine stapling of the mesh during TEP. For patients with a hernial defect measuring less than 4 cm, TEP can be performed without stapling the mesh. The selective non-stapling strategy also helps to reduce the cost of the operation and the potential for nerve entrapment.
