The biomechanical properties of small vessels and microvascular anastomoses have not been studied completely yet. However, in case of vascular injury and various microsurgical reconstructive procedures a safe anastomosis is essential. Quick and reliable tests are needed to test various anastomoses in research and in teaching courses as well for quality control and proper feedback. We aimed to compare selected biomechanical properties of the simple interrupted, the continuous suture and the modified Lauritzen's sleeve-technique. ⋯ The main variables were the number of stitches and the strength of the vessel. The pressure drop was not correlated with the stitch number. One incorrect stitch can dramatically increase the leakage. Although the sleeve-technique is quick to be performed, it cannot withstand high pressure. The suture material itself is far stronger then the vessel. The vessel tensile strength was decreased in the anastomoses. For the given vessel diameter more than 8 stitches should be used.

Sutures are used for the approximation of incised flaps, assistance in primary healing, and hemorrhage control. In oral and periodontal surgery, the appropriate selection of suture material is vital for favorable healing. The aim of the present in-vitro experiment was to evaluate the tensile strengths of 4 different types of suture materials (silk, polygalactine 910, polypropylene, chromic catgut) by simulating potential short-term intraoral exposure to various beverages (saliva, Arabic coffee, tea, cola). ⋯ Whereas, at day 7, silk and polypropylene retained their tensile strengths better than others. The authors recommend precaution in the use of these beverages in the first postoperative week, to avoid adverse effect on the mechanical strength of sutures. When exposure to these beverages are anticipated, it is better to use polypropylene sutures that resists rapid fall in tensile strengths in the early postoperative period.

Microendoscopic Discectomy Combined with Annular Suture Versus Percutaneous Transforaminal Endoscopic Discectomy for Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Prospective Observational Study.
Microendoscopic discectomy (MED) and percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) are 2 of the most popular minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques. We are investigating whether minimally invasive early annular closure can achieve a better clinical effect in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). ⋯ PTED has the advantages of shorter length of incision, shorter operation time, and shorter length of stay. MED + annular suture is associated with greater preservation of disc height, and showed certain advantages of lower recurrence rate, although there was no statistical difference.

Inadvertent fixation of a Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheter by a suture is a rare complication. We present a case report of a patient undergoing heart transplantation in whom the catheter was fixed by a suture at the upper venous cannulation site for the cardiopulmonary bypass. ⋯ The catheter could then be removed. The patient did not suffer from any consequential damage.
