Mental health treatment is a service for military service members who have experienced psychological injury or trauma. Unfortunately, the stigma associated with treatment can prevent many service members from seeking and receiving treatment designed to help them recover. Previous studies have examined the impacts of stigma among military personnel as well as civilians; however, stigma among service members currently receiving mental health treatment is unknown. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationships between stigma, demographic variables, and mental health symptoms in a sample of active duty service members receiving mental health services in a partial hospitalization program. ⋯ In this active duty military cohort, greater mental health stigma was associated with greater severity of mental health symptoms, especially post-traumatic stress symptoms. Some evidence found that ethnicity may also play a role in stigma score differences, particularly in the Asian/Pacific Islander group. Service providers could consider assessing mental health stigma to meet the clinical needs of their patients within the context of their willingness to obtain and adhere to treatment. Anti-stigma efforts to reduce stigma and its impacts on mental health are discussed. Additional research investigating the effect stigma has on treatment outcomes would help guide the relative importance of assessing stigma, in addition to other behavioral health realms.

Civilians constitute a significant wartime target, and trauma accounts for most of their injuries. Air raid sirens have long been used to alert civilians of incoming attacks and have since expanded to warn from natural disasters. Sirens are known to cause significant emotional distress and physiological changes. Injuries inflicted from trauma while moving for shelter have yet to be described in the medical literature. ⋯ This study implies that injuries while moving for shelter were a prevalent cause of physical injury to Israeli civilians during the Israel-Gaza 2021 conflict. Warning sirens injuries should be given appropriate attention-from prevention by directed media campaigns to post-conflict reimbursement.

Alcohol intake before injury and functional and survival outcomes after traumatic brain injury: Pan-Asian trauma outcomes study (PATOS).
There are controversies about the effects of alcohol intake shortly before injury on prognosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. We investigated the association between alcohol intake and functional/survival outcomes in TBI patients, and whether this effect varied according to age and sex. This was a prospective international multicenter cohort study using the Pan-Asian trauma outcomes study registry in Asian-Pacific countries, conducted on adult patients with TBI who visited participating hospitals. ⋯ In multivariable logistic regression analysis, alcohol intake was associated with lower odds for poor functional recovery [4.4% vs 6.6%, a odds ratio (95% confidence interval): 0.68 (0.56-0.83)] and in-hospital mortality (1.9% vs 3.1%, 0.64 [0.48-0.86]). The alcohol intake had interaction effects with sex for poor functional recovery: 0.59 (0.45-0.75) for male and 0.94 (0.60-1.49) for female (P for-interaction < .01), whereas there were no interaction between alcohol intake and age. In TBI patients, alcohol intake before injury was associated with lower odds of poor functional recovery and in-hospital mortality, and these effects were maintained in the male group in the interaction analyses.

Many factors can contribute to the development of macular injury, which results in vision loss as a result of a disease. Heredity, age, underlying eye illness, internal eye surgery, or eye trauma can all cause it. A safer alternative to current therapies for macular degeneration is urgently needed since they all induce ocular irritation and postoperative recurrence as well as a host of other adverse effects. ⋯ No additional medication or surgical procedure was employed in this instance. We treated the macular damage with acupuncture, which relieved the patient's clinical symptoms and had no adverse effects. This demonstrates that acupuncture may be beneficial in treating ophthalmopathy in this direction.

Comparing machine learning and logistic regression for acute kidney injury prediction in trauma patients: A retrospective observational study at a single tertiary medical center.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in patients with trauma and is associated with poor outcomes. Therefore, early prediction of AKI in patients with trauma is important for risk stratification and the provision of optimal intensive care unit treatment. This study aimed to compare 2 models, machine learning (ML) techniques and logistic regression, in predicting AKI in patients with trauma. ⋯ The accuracy score showed no differences between the 2 groups; however, the recall and F1 score were significantly higher in the ML model (.94 vs 56 and.75 vs 64, respectively). The ML model performed better than the logistic regression model in predicting AKI in patients with trauma. ML techniques can aid in risk stratification and the provision of optimal care.
